Till now, I had been reading almost every review and comment made about honda Jazz. Though I had a test drive of the car approximately 15 days ago, but I chose not to write my first impressions of the car on any of the sites. I was enjoying the comments made by people and was absorbing them each day as the new comments came in.

Today, I had a long test drive of the Jazz and finally I booked one. The delivery is expected in another week or so. So why I booked the Jazz when there are so many nice cars from the competition at a lower price? I will try to answer that in a bit.

There were three common observations about people who would choose to buy the Jazz over any other hatch. I would love to put those observations here:

  1. People who would buy the Jazz would probably be stinking rich

  2. People who believe in showing off. who are snobs

  3. People who do not know what is the meaning of "value for money" and probably who are an out and out fool to go for high priced Jazz over other equally good cars from competitoers(i20, grande punto)

Well, if you ask me why I booked jazz. I honestly can't answer. But then I know that:

  1. I am not stinking rich. and probably would never be even in my dream or in rest of my life:)

  2. I dont believe in showing off. I would prefer driving the Jazz and no one seeing me in it or no one knowing I own one

  3. Fool I may be. but the decision I took was not on impulse or out of ignorance. I had been reading almost every post on every site. I liked what people had to say. but then their opinions never convinced me to think along their lines.

You would think why the hell I bought one then?

Answer is I simply fell in love with the car at the first sight. I had been looking to replace my wagon R for the past year and a half. I test drove Tata Sumo Grande to Ford Fusion to Scorpio to Xylo. Every car that was launched, I was there to test drive. I liked each car. but then something inside me was never convinced to go ahead and book one.

I20 and Grande Punto - Hmmm. No offence meant to any of these cars. I20 I considered for a while but courtesy high headed and care-a-damn attitude of Hyundai sales people when I visited the showroom put me off. Also I20 didnt strike a chord with me. Though I liked the design of this car and was the one to say this car truly has European design. But when I thought of booking one. nah I didnt get the feeling of happiness or eagerness or the anxiousness that is associated with buying a new car.

Grande Punto - No. not for me. The headlight design was simply not upto my taste and liking. Though I did like the raised backlights.

Lately with Wagon R, I had starting having some problems, particularly constant pain in my left foot and on and off back ache(because I drive around 60 Km every day in Bangalore's peak traffic). I would never say that wagon R is a poor or bad car. In fact I love the car. But then it disappointed me when I loaded it with 5 people and when it felt like I was pulling a bullock cart. Nonetheless the car will always remain close to my heart for two reasons - my first car and it served my craziness for spaciousness.

Coming back to my decision to book the Jazz. Well the moment I sat in it I felt like this is it. So much space(my craziness as mentioned). By no means, it looks like a small car. The moment I looked at the boot space my resolve to buy one got even stronger. No. I dont carry luggage too often. But yes I wanted the space to be enough to carry enough luggage(courtesy my parents who believe in traveling heavy). Probably, I wanted a big car. which still was small to manage in Bangalore traffic. When I looked the Jazz from both outside and inside I felt it to be big. too big and at the same time quite small to allow me to cut through traffic without much difficulty.

Another aspect. interiors - mind blowing. I confess I have have not had much experience of sitting in any of those big sedans with those funky interiors. All I had was my Wagon R and Santro in family. So for me the interiors were something to long for, something that I associate with nice things one can wish for in life.

I read people saying that this car is just 1.2 engine. Fine. I am no Karthikeyan. I drive at a decent speed and I dont overtake too often. I felt this power would be sufficient for me. I drove for around 40 minutes non stop but no I never felt the car to be underpowered. It was just right for my need.

Its not a diesel engine. yes I know how much I wanted to buy a diesel engine car. But then after driving this car, a thought for a diesel car never came to my mind or I should say I stopped thinking about it completely. diesel was no more my priority anymore.

My biggest disappointment is the absence of seat height adjustment. I would have loved to have that no end. But then again. I think I can do without it for the time being and will probably find a work around for that.

Magic seats. no didnt excite me much. Its an okay-to-have feature but not something that would make me buy the Jazz.

Then what made me book one?

Well apart from the reasons stated above. I just thought - One life to live. why not?
