1.3 petrol is the only engine that’s offered. It’s quicker than the old 1.4 that it replaced but only comes alive at the top of its rev range. The trouble is, it’s not too keen to get there, so you often find yourself changing down a gear in order to encourage it.
Unless you must have it, the CVT automatic gearbox is best avoided. As is common with such transmissions, it allows the Jazz’s engine to rev so high that it becomes unrefined. It also makes the car feel decidedly slower than manual versions when accelerating.
Entry-level cars go without alloy wheels but do have a DAB radio, Bluetooth, automatic lights and wipers, electric mirrors and air conditioning. SE, our favourite trim level, doesn’t cost much more but adds 15in alloy wheels, the Connect infotainment system, parking sensors front and rear, and an alarm. Sat-nav is extra if you need it.
The Jazz boasts lots of equipment, and is roomy and practical, but it feels dated to drive and is expensive compared with the best small cars.
