The issue of which is the best car, is always a debatable one, some prize efficiency, some power, some styling, some the tech beneath the hood, but the New Honda City 1.5 Gxi, comes very close to being the dream car to drive on indian roads.

It was seen as a radical move, when Honda Siel went in for a change of the earlier Honda City, from a boxy and long car into a more contemperory and uber-cool look. Skepticism as always dogged the move. But like all stories this one has had a good opening and hopefully will have a dream ending. We were looking for a car that could reduce our rapidly escalating fuel bill(our other car, an 8 year cielo, though the love of our lives, was guzzling fuel at the rate 8 Kpl).. choices flew thick and fast through the air, we finally plumped in for a toyota corolla and the purchase deferred by six months..

Until we set our eyes on the honda showroom on the way back. A slinky black car, was sitting smugly on the podium inside the showroom. It was love at first sight, and the rest, as they say, is history. We completed the purchase through ICICI, financed for a year, with downpayment of 2 lakhs. there was a delay in delivery of about 2 weeks, due to heavy booking, but the car finally arrived in the beginning of Feb this year.

The car has been aptly named, CITY, I dare say, which other petrol vehicle in its segment can offer you 18 km per the litre, on crowded indian roads, where anarchy and chaos are the norm, where one has to downshift ridiculously often. The decor for the GXi model is diffferent to its cousin the Exi, in fact that is the only factor that seperates it, It has a large dashboard with a wooden finish, plush seating and a pre-fitted alpine music system, the Exi can be customised similarly though, if one wants. The car is wonderfully spacious, leg room is fantastic, and is exactly the right height.

Air conditioning in the car is excellent, even with the A/c on, the car is silent as a cat, believe me if I said you wouldnt notice, if it stopped while driving. Its headlights are extremely powerful, turn night into day, esp on dark by lines. Acceleration is good, can get you off signals rather quickly, however the downside is in the trade off for efficiency. Here power has been compromised, its not a powerful car, marginally more than a zen.. that is one large down side. otherwise this car simply rules. and out on the open road, this is a dream to drive.

People looking to crash spendings on fuel and opting for the mid segment will love the city, with its dreamy looks and minimum maintenance. However, people who want much more zip and verve, and power beneath the hood, may not really pick this. Over all, I recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a mid segment car over its competition.
