My father broke his hip bone in an accident in 2003 and we consulted Dr. Pradeep Sharma (a reputed Otho surgeon) He said operation will take Rs. 70, 000 and father will start walking in 1 week time.

My 1st experience at Holy family hospital, Okhla, New Delhi, on admission, my father was kept on the doorway on a stretcher waiting, till I did not deposit 60, 000 rupees at the cash counter.

The nurses were busy talking and laughing, day and night, even if my father would ring the bell for pot for excretion. I had to call them personally, and then too they would come reluctantly.

Only one of the nurses was very understanding, otherwise others had bad attitude.

That was the beginning of our agony and how a hospital’s hygiene and doctor's negligence can ruin someone’s and his family’s life.

My father was admitted there for 20 days and the treating doctor (Dr.Sharma) was not available for assistance, most of this time, and was on foreign tours, leaving all patients to his assistant doctors.

I am a single lady who is working for living and was also managing my night shifts along with taking care of my father and they insisted that I sleep with my father on the floor in the men's general ward. The ward had a stinking toilet nearby which made it impossible to even breath properly.

On 10th day of admission, Dr. Sharma appears and allots time for hip bone surgery for my father.

I had to struggle for blood transfusion of 5 units as hospital’s Blood bank refused to release blood for surgery and expected me to pay money for blood and also arrange for 5 blood donors at a short notice of 1 day.

The operation was done after too innumerable rounds of running around for blood bank in the next block and medicines counter on the 1st floor

On second day the operation, operated wound got infected and develop pus, because the doctor was doing multiple operations in the ward and my father contracted infection from some other patients operation material. The doctor was not available as he was on a foreign tour. His assistant told me it was normal and you can discharge him. It will heal up soon. We discharged him

On the 3rd day, we were in for another surprise, the femur bone socket was too big for the artificial femur head and it kept slipping out ! My father was shouting in pain.

Then next night at 2.00 pm the there was nearly half bucket of pus and blood discharge from my fathers wound!

We approached Dr. Sharma who was again not in country and so I admitted my father in Kailash hospital. The doctors told me that wound was highly infected and the femur head will keep on slipping out. They advised me to have the artificial bone removed.

The Doctor was never available, even on leaving message. Other Delhi Ortho surgeons refused to touch a case operated by Dr Pradeep Sharma. Then Dr. Sharma refused to remove the hip bone even if the patient dies in the process, because my father would limp. I think it was a blow to his ego.

We admitted him to Orthonova hospital, South Delhi where I forced Dr Sharma to re-operate and remove the artificial hip bone in that hospital. Orthonova was the only place where I received some support during those tough times.

It took me 8 long and painful months to have my father recover from that dreadful wound and stand up and walk. I ended up paying more that Rs 4 lacs for the process!

I want to say that whether it was the Holy family hospital where my agonies started. The staff which treated the patients and their family as they have come on charity.

My car stereo got stolen from the parking of the hospital and the hospital security staff refused any ownership of the theft.

The blood bank which was too stiff on blood donors before releasing blood or whether it was the doctor who was careless while operating, or the operation theater where we do not know how our loved one is contracting some infection due to mass surgeries being conducted.

My bad experience at Holy Family will haunt me throughout my life.
