This Bilbo Baggins tale is much fast paced adventure than its sequel LOTR. Though you need not read this book to understand the LOTR series, it does make you enjoy the LOTR story much better if you read the Hobbit's tale.
It makes you understand why there is enmity between Dwarfs and Elfs, how the hobbit got hold of the ring itself, what was Sauron doing and where was he till he reached back Mordor, and in general much more about Dwarves and valley of Dale and other kingdoms which do not appear much in the LOTR series. It also tells size doesnt really matter in an adventure :-) So enjoy this book.
