Where is the “H” in the new logo?

In a way, it indeed seems quite funny. Hindustan Lever, nay, Hindustan Unilever, spent crores of rupees to establish its brand name over the past 40 years or so and now, the company will once again spend some more crores of rupees to remove the old name from the memory of the people and establish a new name. This is probably what is known as keeping the cycle of life of going?

Anyway, HLL is now officially known as Hindustan Unilever Ltd following which; its new corporate identity represented by a new logo has now come into effect. The new logo, blue in colour, has just a hollowed out “U” with lovely patterns made into it. The earlier logo was green and had the “H” of the Hindustan Lever. But in the new logo, nowhere is there any indication of the Hindustan being a part of the Unilever. The company has indeed clarified that the new logo keeps more in synch with the global brand name of Unilever. So then why the need to have the prefix of Hindustan at all? Are we still living in a regime where the prefix of “Hindustan” is mandatory? Given the design of the logo, it would have made sense for the company to go for the global name of Unilever. Today, HLL is ingrained into the minds of India, so whether or not there is a Hindustan in the name of the company, people would still identify the company as HLL only. And it will indeed take some more time and lots of money to erase the earlier logo and get identified with the new logo.
