Poor baby!!

I was surprised to see a houseful show of Heyy Babyy at 8:45 a.m. Sajid Khan sure has an audience who’s dying to check out his skills. Heyy Babyy succeeds to a large extent for the targeted audience. The introduction of characters and the central plot are at a feverish pace and that works.

The typical huge sets (typically Sabu Cyril and Sharmishta Roy kind of) and big production values are seen throughout Heyy Babyy, which are done by Acropolis.

Story:

Akshay Kumar plays Aroush…he works at a nightclub and is a known Casanova. Riteish Deshmukh plays Tanmay…he works as a party entertainer for kiddy parties and beds the single and lonely moms. Fardeen Khan plays Ali….a gambler who doesn't win much at the cricket matches…

But wins over babes at sports bars. The three guys are having a blast when a baby walks into their lives and creates havoc!!! At first they resent the baby’s arrival. Half way through the movie the baby gets separated from them for some reason and then they realize the value of the baby. How the three guys come to terms with single-hood and fatherhood combined forms the crux of Heyy Babyy.

Performances:

Akshay Kumar definitely scores over everyone else by a huge margin. He’s given the meatiest role. His emotional graph from a carefree Casanova to a loving father is well shown. Riteish Deshmukh is good but hams in parts. Fardeen Khan is almost sidelined. He’s extremely unimpressive and leaves no mark on your mind after the film. Vidya Balan is good, not in form though. She emotes almost the same as she is in Lage Raho Munnabhai. Slightly repetitive. Boman Irani is adequate. Anupam Kher is wasted.

Technicals:

1) The way Angel’s first b’day is captured is brilliant. It’s a sort of a memory album kind of cinematography.

2) The scene where the restaurant plan fails and the trio discuss stuff…a lovely low angle shot is taken to show helplessness.

3) Shah Rukh Khan’s entry is well captured. He looks extremely handsome.

4) The background score throughout the movie is forgettable…it just doesn’t register.

Good scenes:

1) Nappy change for Angel, the first time is really nice.

2) The scene where they discuss the common girl who works for Virgin airlines has some real cool lines.

3) Riteish’s outburst in marathi at the Mayor’s son’s birthday is damn good…makes you roll in the aisles provided you understand marathi!!

4) The scene with Fardeen and Vidya in the restaurant and the scene immediately after that are both hilarious.

Cool stuff:

1) Angel, without doubt is Heyy Babyy’s biggest asset. She’s so cute , you can’t help loving her.

2) A good first half. The second half suffers from a post-interval slack.

3) Witty one-liners in some scenes.

Uncool stuff:

There’s a whole lot of it.

1) The scenes of preparing baby food are overtly repetitive and rather crass.

2) The scene where the trio meets various women to get to know of Angel’s mother and get beatings is stretched.

3) Choreography is extremely ordinary throughout. Nothing worth a mention even though Farah Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant are choreographers.

4) Why does Akshay sing a song to apologize to Vidya? Very filmy.

5) How does Vidya leave Angel at home while attending Riteish’s friend’s marriage? Careless writing here…no mother would leave such a small child alone.

6) An extremely filmy climax at the airport. Totally predictable ending.

My Verdict:

Heyy Babyy is worth one watch for a real cute baby, an entertaining first half and an ordinary story told differently. A typical bollywood, no-brainer..this one is worth a single viewing.
