A couple of weeks back when I knew that a film by the name of ‘Heroes’ was to be released, I thought this was going to be one of those Pseudo Intellect movies, which have nothing to offer but preaching about how great the Indian army is. Much to my surprise, the film turns out to be one of those films to which you watch and realise that you’ll probably never watch it again but what you saw was really good.

Contrary to what people believe Heroes is not a film about the soldiers who died for their country but it’s about the Heroes they leave behind. Samir Karnik picks up a Hollywood DVD (motorcycle diaries) and makes a good interpretation for the Indian film audience.

Without going into chapters of the film, the film states that the whole problem with war is that they’ll be people left behind, who will suffer from a loss, obviously, but then that old saying of life moves on,  will always remain. Take for example, Preity Zinta’s character of a widow who has to move on from her Husband’s death, to keep her son and in laws in the right state as a duty, just like her deceased husband would have wanted or the over eccentric Sunny Deol, who misses his brother cum buddy, despite suffering a disability himself or maybe even a doctor who was always against his son being in the army, finally realises that it was his will to join, fight & subsequently die for the country.

Performances are good too, I mean nothing ‘over the moon’ kind of stuff but a decent film with decent performances. I felt Preity Zinta was real good, after a long time seen something worthwhile from the actress, her inner feelings of her character are presented very well by Preity, definitely the star of the show from my end. Salman Khan’s brief role was good, again straight forward by the straight forward Salman and was great to hear dialogues from him in a Punjabi accent, even though it was funny in some parts. An average performance from Mithun, I think its probably the dialogues given to him that are probably to blame for it being average, I mean he’s hamming and this is Mithun we are talking about - one of the best natural actors of India. There’s also a surprise performance from Dino Morea, he’s acting is actually of a normal human being for once! Sohail Khan, Vatsal Seth, Bobby Deol provide good support to the film with good, not over the top, acting. The supporting cast is good too, I think the woman that played Mithun’s wife is wonderful. Riya Sen and Amrita Arora are in the film for errrrrrrrrrrrrr……

I think the music is below average. I didn’t like the most popular song  ‘Mannata’ it was decent to hear for a little while, until they suddenly popped out with the lyrics of ‘Santa Banta’ and that was that from my end! Makhna is good but badly pictured, I guess the Deol brothers spoilt it with dancing seen on the moon. Other one are time pass. Do remember its not a film that should be seen for songs but sadly if there is 3-4 songs pictured in the film, then at least they should move the story forward in a film like this. Apart from Mannata, none of the other songs do that.

Brilliantly shot, superb cinematographer, though I do think this Sami Karnik guy is good in getting this department correct always. ‘Kyun, Ho Gaya Na’ was also a well shot film.

So all in all a good film, nice time pass about the true heroes of India, the people that they leave behind

HOLD ON

Sunny Deol - what was he doing?

After a long time I felt embarrassed watching a Hindi film, I felt disgusted with myself watching a disabled Sunny Deol come off his wheel chair and beating people up to an extent that even ‘The Matrix’ wouldn’t show and then the director makes him start breaking the floor tiles of a dance floor in a club/bar, I mean for crying out loud how can people get away with that?

Then there’s a part where Sunny Deol is driving, suddenly spots a couple of fighter jets in the air, he gets out of the car, on his wheel chair and starts moving his chair and starts shouting. It is the funniest scene I’ve seen this year. The scene is basically trying to show you that he’s frustrated at being a medically retired Squadron leader but this is no way to show that emotion. I’m sorry this is the height of Stupidity!

Barring this Sunny Super Hulk segment of the film, I enjoyed the film. Good watch and Samir Karnik presents a nice film to watch.
