We (my husband, myself and our 3-year old daughter) went to Sri Lanka from October 5-11, 2010 for a holiday. At Dambulla we were recommended by our travel agent to stay at Hotel Heritance kandalama. The hotel is located amidst a thick jungle, with a lake on one side and mountains on the other. The hotel is designed in such a way that there was minimum damage to the environment (by architect Geoffrey Bawa). The hotel is 2.5 kms long, and one employee told us that he lost 20 kilos in 2 years, just walking around.
Sprawling landscape, excellent ambiance. It does get lonely at times. Food is excellent, though expensive (blame them for being so far away!) Monkeys are a problem here (the hotel advises you not to encourage them).
They have chess and carom and jungle treks. Other wise there is pretty much nothing you can do here, except admire the scenery around. That is the best part. Service is par excellence and seems the same for every visitor.
The only entertainment for my daughter was the bath-tub, and of course, the monkeys!!!!
