Henry V lived between 1387 and 1422.He was king from the age of twenty six. He pursued a strong military policy with France. Had a lived a few days more the throne of France would pass to him. Unfortunately he died of dysentery. The present play is all about the king's battles with France-political and military. He comes across as a man of great strength who can deal with just any situation. He can chastise enemies, fight like a lion.
Well, he can also romance a lady who doesn't understand much english. Incidentally Scene IV in Act III is in French.
The story. By referring to an obscure salique law the French king denies Henry V his rightful territories. Henry declares war on France. The peers of Cambridge, Scroop and Grey are bought off by France. Henry however finds out and they are punished. The English enter France and camp at Harfleur. After some diplomatic exchanges a war happens at Agincourt. Despite being short of men, the English are victorious. Peace prevails in the end as the French princess Catherine marries Henry V of England.
