Most of the reviewers in on ?Heena?. in this website are either highly critical of this drama serial. I admit they have strong arguments and I agree with most of what they say. I only like to disagree on one thing. After watching most of the episodes of ?Heena? the only thing that comes to my mind is the fact that women are oppressed everywhere. To me this is the message of this drama serial. Heena could rebel against her family and lead a life of her own. If she did it most of us would hail the dramatist and feel satisfaction that South Asian women are getting modern. Some reviewers have stated that it is a story about Muslim society. Yes it is but at the same time girls like Heena can be found in almost every family in South Asia. Even Heena decided to act alone would any landlord give her a room to stay? Even in 2003, it is much easy for a divorced man to remarry then a divorced woman. Even in many places a man can marry a second woman (even though he has already a wife). This problem is more acute among the Muslims. In ?Heena? we can also easy how easy it is for a Muslim man to divorce his wife but it is very difficult for a muslim woman to divorce her husband (she has to go to court for it). Unlike many serials here at least it is shown that bad persons can be man (Akram) or woman (Ruby) both. But look at Kushum where all the bad characters are only female (Tashu, Reema, Nikita and so on). A reviewer has questioned that Sameer is a Hindu name or muslim women do not wear Saree. This clearly shows how little many Hindus know about the Muslims. I am a muslim and my name is Razib (in my school days teachers and students often mockingly called me as Rajiv Gandhi). My nick name is Apu (or Opu- which is short form of Apurbo). In Bangladesh almost all the women wear Saree irrespective of religion.
It is easy to say Heena is dull and boring but it is difficult not to see the problems that the serial highlights.
