Extra weight is OBESITY!


What is obesity? A person is called obese if his weight is more than normal(standard based on  height and age).


Or when extra fat is noticed on undressed body of a person or a condition of excessive fatness;(simple definition for a common man).


To be more accurate; anybody having BMI more than 25.(BMI is calculated by weight in kilograms;divided by height in meters.)

*1. A person looks fat but he may not weigh more; or




  1. A person looks normal but is overweight.




:This is the reason all doctors work on the basis of BMI  (body mass index).


In case of No. 1- people want to lose weight for looking better(cosmetic purpose).


In case of No. 2- a person is not bothered; unless he suffers from serious illness because of obesity, which is pointed out by a doctor.


Obesity has become a type of epidemic in big cities; particularly among the children, menopausal women. It has become a matter of grave concern; because people go to lose weight when matter becomes worse or it is too late; when somebody is admitted in ICCU or going for knee or hip replacement surgery. “Prevention is better than cure” has to be told to all obese people. In 1970 only 5% of patients used to get convinced; in 1980 15%; in 1990; 30% and today(in 2000 year) 60% patient are eager to lose weight. But unfortunately they land up at wrong places(centers, clinics); which are mushrooming very fast; where we do not find any qualified person to know your case of obesity.


MANAGEMENT OF OBESITY—


It is not that easy;it depends on causes of obesity;because it is not always over-eating.(people think if the eat less and join gym. They will lose weight;which is never possible.You may land up with lot of nutritional or orthopaedic problems!


It becomes easy for a physician to treat your obesity once he knows all your history;i.e.your life style;habits;family background etc.


1)Irregular food habits to be corrected.If you are one of them;you may say “I  EAT


SO LESS….”(this every obese patient tells me).But keep one diary and note


down what you are eating whole one week. Submit this diary to the physician


and he will let you know where you  have done mistakes!


2)Mental Imbalance—particularly Depression;where person overeats to overcome


this problem.This has to be treated accordingly.


3)Endocrinological problems-mostly HYPO-THYROIDISM;more common in


females.Unfortunately treatment so simple and cheap;but patient comes to a


doctor very late;when she had wasted  lot of money and time in Gym; Centres;


etc.with many  other   medical problems(they are so many which I cannot write


because of  short of space)


4)FAMILY HISTORY—Certain families have got concept of overeating wrong


foods;particularly in Delhi;and northern India.Some of them will never


improve;even if they have been advised correctly in food habits. They never


change.This habit of wrong eating goes on generations!


So dear friends; management of OBESITY becomes difficult  not only in my country;but in other countries also. So it has become like HEALTH HAZRD!
