Shocking revelation
Every time I used to hear this name, I used to wonder why the name ?Head & Shoulders.? Imagine you don?t know a thing about the product, and you hear somebody say, ?hey man, I used head and shoulders today, it was great!? Wonder what this guy was using all these days!
This was before I knew it was a shampoo, mainly for those horrible, yucky white flakes which infest human scalps. To think of it now, the name does make sense.
Old !!!
H&S has been in this business of trying to clean out our ?.? (now, don?t go thinking I am talking about our pockets..) flakes for more than 35 years. They are old, man!!! Basically something you can trust your crowning glory with. It is a product of Procter & Gamble. Some of their other products include Oil of Olay, Old Spice ? Aftershave, Mediker, Pantene, Rejoice, etc.

Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is a disease that causes flaking of the skin, usually affecting the scalp. In adults and adolescents, it is called ?dandruff? whereas for babies, goes with the name of ?cradle cap.? It is basically scaling of the skin. Seborrhea (sebum ? oil and rhea- secretion ) ? this is just oiliness of the skin without redness or irritation, and from there, it may turn into seborrheic dermatitis which is the inflammation of the skin with scaling or redness.
Why me??
Basically it all starts with your oil glands overworking themselves which in turn may increase the population of the microorganism, fungus, Pityrosporum ovale, which is normally present in small numbers in our skin. So our SD or seborrheic dermatitis or our well-known dandruff makes our scalp itch with the deposition of white flakes ? these get dislocated from the scalp when we scratch. Stress, fatigue, extreme weather, oily skin, infrequent shampooing, use of lotions containing alcohol may increase SD.
Where?
SD usually affects the skin of the scalp, face, nose, eyebrows, behind the ears, and external ear, and you thought it is only the scalp.
Not to worry, help is at hand!!!
One might look for nonprescription shampoos containing tar, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid. Try to avoid scratching, as though by itself, may be harmless, but might cause redness and other infections.
Our H&S is quite effective at it and is FDA approved.
Fact or fiction..
Most of us believe that if a shampoo produces more lather, it is more effective in cleaning our hair.
-The amount of lather has nothing to do with how clean your hair looks, so be gentle, and remember, hair today will be gone tomorrow if you don?t care for it!!!
Using more shampoo will ensure hair is squeaky clean.
- Not necessarily true. A small amount of shampoo slightly larger than the size of a small coin and diluted is usually sufficient. Again don?t forget to clean your scalp at least two times per week, and guess if you are planning to enter the Guinness Book of World Records and have long, flowy hair which measures.. God knows how much it should be, then you might end up using a whole bottle of it.
Which one?
H&S is available in 3 formulas.
One can use the ?Clean & Balanced? to get a clean look minus the dandruff. Those with dry hair can use, ?Smooth & Silky? which moisturizes and conditions and relieves dryness and ?Refreshing Menthol? removes itchy feeling and cools the scalp with a great refreshing menthol fragrance. For dandruff, my choice usually will be either Smooth & Silky (when my hair is excessively dry) or the menthol one, to cool my head.
All these shampoos are pH balanced which means they can be used on a daily basis. They are available in 5 mL sachets (Rs. 3/-) and 200 mL bottle (Rs. 122/-).
Directions for Use
Hmm.. just buy a sachet and read the instructions there - it is that simple.
