I have two large dogs that were born to chew. on paper, shoes, toys, bones, and yes, people. When it comes to dogs, it takes patience, training and time.
If your dogs are biting for attention from a person, or merely out of excitement to see someone coming through the door, here are a few tips:
Get the dog on a leash and collar inside the home.
Have one or two people outside your front door and have them ring the doorbell.
When the people enter the home, as your dog attempts to'bite', pull back with a firm tug on the leash.
Each time the dog doesn't bit, complement the dog or reward with treats, or pet its head saying'good dog.'
Do this a few times a day over the course of a few weeks(some dogs take longer, ours took about 4 weeks.)
As they are getting better, remove the leash and repeat above steps until biting is done.
You may apply this method to other situations where the dog may be biting, even jumping. Also, if your dog is a chewer, when you find him/her with something they are not supposed to have, take the item away and give him/her a bone to chew on, but be consistent with this. Do not yell, hit or scare the dog, they will learn that bones and toys are good, shoes are bad.
Practice makes perfect, and so does patience. Our dogs are still jumpers, but only with us, with other people. They wag their tails and lick away! We can live with that!
