Havelock is one of the most popular islands among the 600 in the region and is most developed when it comes to tourism. It is a 2-4 hour ferry ride away from Port Blair.
Named after a British general, Havelock Island is the largest island that comprise of Ritchie's Archipelago, in the east of Andaman covering an area of 113.93 sq km. Havelock is situated 57 km north east of the capital city Port Blair. The population in Havelock island as of 2001 is just 5, 354. It consists of 5 villages which are Shyam Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Radha Nagar, Krishna Nagar and Govinda Nagar.
How to Reach Havelock Island:-
Access to Havelock Islands is possible through the following: 1. Government Ferry which Operates all throughout the year 2. Makruzz ferry(private)- it does not operate from May to August 3. Coastal Cruise which operates from September to April 4. Express Bhagya 5. Green Ocean- Operates all throughout the year.
Activities on Havelock Island:-
- Sea Walk gives you an experience of underwater sea walk. The activity is available at Elephant Beach in Havelock Island. It costs 3200 Rupees 2. Scuba Diving -Scuba diving is a very popular activity in the wholw of Andaman and is another important one in Havelock as well. You can either opt for beginners or advanced and can even get lessons beforehand 3. Snorkeling is available at Elephant Beach 4. Fishing trips, Kayaking and boating are other important activities.
Attractions on Havelock Island:-
Havelock has become a favored destination among honeymooners in India. The only govt accomodation is the Dolphin Beach Resort but there are a lot of private properties as well. This island has three major beaches viz. Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach and Kalapatthar Beach. Easily the most beautiful beach, the Radhanagar beach was adjudged to be the best in Asia in 2004 by Time magazine. With prisitne white beaches, clear waters, corals and palms lining the shores, this is a bucket list item. This place is ideal for snorkelling too and has a lagoon called Blue Lagoon which can be reached by crossing into the forest. Elephant Beach was mostyl swept away in the tsunami of 2004 but boasts of best varieties of corals on the island and is the best spot on the island for snorkelling. The Kalapathar beach is named so due to abundance of black rock on it coastline. It is a quiet place and good for relaxing.
