Shaym benegal's film was unreleased for 2 years for want of distributors..Another attempt at the common man's film. This movie revolves around story of 5 women and each having a story of their own. The base is a lower middle class muslim family in a small village in UP. Largely inspired from steven spielberg's first attemt at a thinking man's film, The color purple, starring whopppi goldberg. Shabana Azmi has truly given an award deserving performance as an ill-treated uneducated wife..(same role played by whoppi goldberg in the color purple). The script is quite predictible but its very real and intense. Wonderfully supported by rajeshwari sachdev and Nandita Das (In my books she is already a winner of the award for best supporting actress unless something superb comes up). Watch out for a wonderful scene involving nandita das and rajit kapoor when she comes to know that rajit kapoor has sterlized himself. Watch this movie if you are a true movie buff.
