A Speciality Supermarket Thronged By Pigeons

I have been shopping at Haiko supermarket since the last ten years, and I used to love the place because of its great range of products coupled with superior quality. I used to visit twice a month for my household supplies, consumables, raw food and even festive shopping.

However, since the last two years, the management has shown a complete lack of sense of hygiene by ignoring an important aspect - the presence of pigeons inside the store.

These flying rats are all over the place, between the ventilation pipes and exhaust, at the entrance, in the ledges and perched in spaces above the counters.

The most appalling part is they flutter above the cosmetics counter, as well as the section of personal products. Same applies in the groceries section and the raw food one.

I cannot imagine purchasing veggies and fruits from an enclosed space that houses these disease-mongering birds. Neither can I buy sanitary napkins, cold creams, cosmetics from such an area.

Repeated attempts at letting the managers know about this(in case they haven't noticed themselves) has had no effect, neither does it seem to affect other shoppers. But I would like to spread awareness on the bad effects of cohabiting with pigeons. Their droppings and feathers are known to be carriers of infections and bacteria. Plus, their exposure to food items renders the latter extremely unsuitable for human use. Try checking with your local doctor how bad their continuous presence can be, and you'll be as pissed as I am to find them inside a food store.

It's appalling that a store like Haiko that houses really good product range for Indians and expats alike has no cognisance of this menace. The so-called bird proofing which they claim they have done is useless and obviously hasn't worked. Neither has the refurbishing and the posh interiors done any good in driving out these pests who had made their homes inside Haiko long before they undertook renovation.

For one, I have stopped purchasing from Haiko, and also urge the people in my contact to do so. However, I don't really think it matters to the guys  at Haiko. A big thumbs down to the unhygienic attitude.
