I had been using HTC Wildfire S for the last 2.5 years and was constantly being pestered by my kids for the last 6 months or so… to go in for a better phone which “runs” all the current “games” with a bigger screen…. Thus started the exercise of “Window-Shopping” on the net.

My expectations / requirements from our new phone were as follows;

1.  Should be BRANDED  (My kids straightaway dismissed all Indian Brands….)

2.  Minimum 5 Inch Screen

3.  Dual Sim(preferable)

4.  Good Quality Camera - Minimum 8 MP rear a and 2 MP Selfie

5.  Decent Sound(Quality as well as Volume)

6.  Must have dedicated GPU for games

7.  Good Battery Life

8.  Budget of 20 K

Finally we narrowed down on

1)  LG L 90

2)  SONY M2

3)  SAMSUNG GRAND 2

4)  HTC DESIRE 816  (Subject to availability in the Local Market)

Finally on 22-06-2014  myself and my son went to Poorvika  and were lucky enough to find that they had a solitary piece of HTC DESIRE 816 – Grey….  The price quoted by them was Rs. 23000/=.   I bargained and they were kind enough to finalise the deal at Rs. 22, 600/=.   I got a white Colour Flip Cover complementary with the phone(Costing around Rs. 1000).

Below are my comments based on 10 days of use;

  1. Excellent 5.5inch HD screen with good viewing angles.  The display is crisp and the colours look natural.  (I give 9.5 / 10)

  2. The 13 MP Camera is excellent in well-lit conditions.  However a bit of noise creeps in the low light areas… But its not bad in any way.  ( I give 8 / 10)

  3. The Dual – Boom Sound Stereo Speakers are EXCELLENT.   The out quality is superb and the Volume is sufficiently loud  ( I give 10 / 10)

  4. Android 4.4.2 with 1.6 Ghz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor … Navigation, multitasking, Touch etc  work smooth as butter and no question whatsoever about lag  ( I give 9 / 10)

  5. Internal Memory is 8 GB.  Out of which I got approx 4.1 GB Free.  I have installed the very necessary apps only  (I do not like much junk in my phone).

  6. We Chat

  7. Angry birds

  8. Avast anti-virsu

  9. File Manager  (There is No inbuilt File Manager… we had to download the app)

  10. Kingsoft Office

  11. MX player

  12. Riptide GP

  13. Subway Surfer

  14. Talking Tom

  15. Temple Run Brave

  16. Ixigo Trains & Hotels

  17. TOI

  18. Word Web dicitionary

The aforesaid apps have consumed almost 800 mb of space and I am left with 3 GB of Internal Memory,  Which is sufficient(for me)…( I give 9/10)

Spec-wise it claims to support 128 GB external Memory Cards…. About which I cannot say anything…. Since I loaded it with a 16 GB card and it is working smooth. 6. The RAM is 1.5 GB.  Out of Which My device availability was 1.33 GB only.  At any given point of time the RAM being used(depends on the apps open) is anywhere from 650 to 900 MB which leaves almost 450 MB free all the time.  Hence all operations are smooth without any stutter of Lag.  (  I Give 9/10).

  1. Regarding the Built Quality…. The phone is made up of Plastic…. But it does not feel cheap…. Infact the phone has a premium look and solid built and the physical buttons are not creaky or loose.  The back is very glossy and the finger prints are clearly visible.

  2. The Non – Removable Batter capacity is 2600.   The time taken to power it from 2-3% to 100% is almost 3 Hours.   My Usage Patter is as follows; a.   Telephone Calls of 2-3 Minutes duration:   8 – 10 calls per day b.   Receiving / Reading SMS:   8 – 10 Messages c.    Connected on WI-FI:   9  am to 6 Pm d.   Browsing the Net / Watching U-tube videos:   45 Minutes e.   Playing Games:    1 Hour f.   Listening to Music:   45 Minutes. I start from my house at 7 am  with Battery at 100% and with the above usage…. At bed time(ie) around 11 PM,  the battery is around 15% with the battery save mode setting in…. The phone lasts through the night and by morning 4.30 am  its around 7-8 & and I put it in charge.

I consider my phone usage as Medium Heavy  so the battery lasts 24 Hours.

I Presume with Light Usage… It may alst 36 Hours

This is quite good considering the 5.5 Inch HD Screen  ( I Rate it 8 / 10)

9.  Last. but not the least. The Call Quality is also very good. The voice is extremely clear to both the parties and there no disturbance of any kind (I Rate 9.5/10)

FINAL THOUGHTS

On Browsing the net I found that this mobile was being sold at a premium rate of Rs. 25000+ by some of the e-retailers…. I feel that for 22.6 K I got a good bargain. I AM 100% SATSIFIED WITH THE PHONE AND WILL SURELY RECOMMEND IT TO ANY ONE  WANTING TO PURCHASE IT…. GO FOR IT…

If HTC brings the price down a bit…. Say to Rs. 20000/=…. THEN THIS PHONE WILL BECOME A BEST-SELLER…. M2 AND GALAXY GRANDE 2 LOOK PALE IN FRONT OF MY HTC DESIRE 816…….
