Good quality prints at a lower cost. Review on HP LaserJet 1000

About a month back we have installed one “hp LaserJet 1000” series printer in our office mainly for network printing. We have too many other types of printers from HP and Epson including few dot-matrix printers for printing B4 papers. Only reason for choosing this printer is for good quality printing at lower cost and less time for mass printing.

Some useful features of this ‘hp LaserJet 1000’: -

1. This printer is a simple and a low-cost laser printer for black and white prints. As per their claim, HP LaserJet print cartridge prints 2500 pages at 5% average coverage. Having duty cycle of 7000 pages-per-month.

   
   




2. It has 250-sheet input tray, 125-sheet output tray. This feature is useful for mass printing.

   
   




3. Resolution - Prints good quality black & white documents at 600 x 600 dpi with Resolution Enhanced technology (REt) (1200 dpi effective output).

   
   




4. Fast printing – According to ‘hp’, it has an instant-on fuser, which eliminates warm-up time and prints 1st page in 15 seconds and rest of the time 10 pages per minute. I have not checked with a stopwatch but it is really fast. We found it very useful incases of printing a huge document or even PowerPoint slides in black and white.

   
   




5. This printer is compatible and works with Microsoft Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP. 6. It has an option to print ‘Watermark’. Printing of ‘Watermark’ has three options - Draft, Confidential, and Sample. I can even create a watermark of my choice (no graphics). This is a very useful feature that can be used in many occasions.

   
   

Minimum system requirements: - According to HP, it is compatible with Microsoft Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP. Windows 98: IBM-compatible PC, Pentium 90 MHz processor, 32MB RAM or higher Windows Me: IBM-compatible PC, Pentium 150 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM or higher Windows 2000: IBM-compatible PC, Pentium 133 MHz processor, 64 MB RAM or higher PC should have: 15 MB free hard disk space, USB Port. PC should have CD-ROM disk drive or network connection for installation. I prefer to have much higher hardware configuration. Some of our PCs with lower configuration are working well.

According to the Literatures: Non-Windows based operating systems are not be supported by this printer / software. This hp laserJet 1000 software does not support Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT versions. hp LaserJet 1000 DOS printer driver permits printing from MS-DOS applications that are run from within Windows. Surprisingly, today I came to know that two of our network PCs are having Win 95 but working very well with this printer. May be, it support a network computer with Win95 but main computer must have higher version. We have to check this feature.

Problem:- Printer driver of a network PC is disturbed if the main computer (with the printer) is off and the network PC gives printing command to this printer. One has to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver on the network PC. In two occasions we have faced this problem. Service engineer may have some solution to this problem but we have not approached them so far.

Limitation:- Like many other printers it can print only on letter, legal, A4, A5, envelopes. Paper sizes:- 3 x 5 in (76 x 127 mm) minimum; 8.5 x 14 in (216 x 356 mm) maximum. Still we print lot of carbon copies to satisfy statutory requirements. This printer cannot handle bigger size paper or papers with carbon.

Service

One can depend on the service of ‘hp’. We are away from Mumbai still get service in time. Pre-budget price for us was around Rs.16000/-

Suggestion:-

hp LaserJet 1000 is good for good quality printing in Black & White with ‘Watermark’ at low-cost and high speed. Is suitable for Offices, Advocates, Xerox centers that also take out computer printouts, self-employed persons who require lot of printouts (legal/A4/A5) for their clients. For personal use at residence, I prefer a DeskJet from 'hp'
