I bought this HP Deskjet 1050 All-in-One printer back in early 2011 and it still works perfectly today. If you take care of this printer(or any other printer for that purpose) and use it well, I am sure it would last very well for a long time.
I did experience some problems with the cartridges but not with the printer. Once the cartridge had leaked inside the printer and I had to open the entire printer and clean it.
Anyways here are few tips from my side to improve your printers life:
Keep it clean - Cover your printer with a cloth or plastic to avoid dust. Dust can spoil your printer sooner than you think, so when not in use, cover it. Once in a while clean the printer with a mild solution. If you can open and clean the moving parts, then that's best, but be careful, if your not sure about opening it, clean as much as possible from the outside
Use it atleast once a week - Print something in black and white and color. This way your printer parts will remain functional
Cartridge care - If you take care of the cartridges then they will take care of you. If you do not use the printer for long duration such as a month or more, then take the cartridges out of the printer and store them separately in a sealed container. This will prevent them from drying up. When you insert the cartridges back, align them and first run a test print. This will help get rid of the initial dust that appears on the print if you have not used your printer for long
Others - Use good quality paper. You can also disconnect your printer from the power socket if you are not going to use it for a long duration
