The gentle waves were touching his feet, he could see them dipping his legs with their slight caress and he was trying to feel…..he got up from that wheelchair and tread slowly towards them , with his hands forming a pair of wings…..he was finally free!! Oh..he so wanted to be finally free….and he sat there watching helplessly waiting to be free.
For years he had fought with Life!! Smiling and with no regrets, forgetting his limitations, he had given way to happiness and hope for many. Bounded to a wheelchair and as a quadriplegic he still knew the best ways “ to create magic” !!
Despite his own pain and tears he still says “Believe!! Life is beautiful, Life is Good”……
And he believes it till the last day of his life…..
So why does he need to end so….
If life is so beautiful....
If he has been able to lit so many smiles…
If he knows that life is about living, hoping, loving and dreaming….
Why does one final day he decides to get rid of his being……
To understand Guzaarish, you need to empathise with Ethan and to empathise with Ethan, you need to feel his pain. Years later, maybe post Taare Zameen Par, I see bollywood churning out an extremely sensitive movie as this. I term it as sensitive, because in preliminaries, despite the fact that an ailment is the prime issue, nowhere its seems to be forced or shoved on faces. Depicted in a very strong and subtle manner with as difficult as it might be to live a life of a quadriplegic, it drives in the right amount of emotions and turmoil. Albeit not only of the patient ,but all those who are connected or affected by him.
Sophie’s sincere efforts and helpless pain to see him diminish bit by bit , and finally making a choice which takes oodles of strength from her.
A mother who lives apart from the ailing son , because he does not wish her to go through the pain everyday, and supporting him on his choices; though it takes every ounce of courage from her!
Devyani choosing to stand by him, even if it means giving away her best friend to death!!
The doctor, his first love Estella…….and the list grows…..
The actors chosen fit the role like a hand in glove! And since much have already been said about Hrithik and Aishwarya; I would especially give the attributes to well chosen smaller roll acts specifically to the cameo of Nafisa Ali!! Though the wave had already begin with Dil Chahta Hai, Guzaarish just depicts that gone are the days when Bollywood mothers were about sob and tears. Its now about portrayal of 21st century moms, who depict a much stronger picture of today’s woman.
Saying that music and songs are melodious would be an understatement!! They make you feel alive…and if this is what Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut!! Then its truly commendable!! “Sau gram zindagi” topping my list, “Tera Zikr” follows a close second……”Jaane kiske khwaab” and “ keh na saku”, can be heard in a loop!! Forming a melody at right places and fitting in the story, they just add on to the magic!
Set in on a picturesque Goa, with a mansion and backdrop now so known as “SLB sketch” ….Guzaarish is a movie “Not to be Seen, But felt”
