What happens when a young 30-something director obsessed with 70's style rustic 2-hero potboilers tries to recreate that magic in 2014 - U get Gunday. But does he succeed - the answer is a big NO.
Gunday is the story of the notorious duo of Bala (Arjun Kapoor) & Bikram (Ranveer Singh) who are rendered homeless by the historic Indo-Bangla partition of 1971 and grow up to become Bengal's most loved and dreaded coal mafia. But their bromance is put to test when a cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra) walks into their hearts from nowhere.
To begin with, Gunday is predictably boring with ridiculously half-baked scenes, the characters have no depth or build up for you to feel their agony, pain, joys or sorrows.
Ranveer Singh of course walks away with aplomb and poise while Priyanka and Arjun are left behind hamming and preening, respectively.
Ali Abbas Zafar's direction and screenplay are tight, but dialogues are way too bland and insipid.
Music is the highlight but that sadly doesn't come to the rescue when sandwiched between frivolous scenes and flaky characters and none of the revelations come as a surprise.
I'm going with two stars. So my advice - Don't let these Gundays rob you off your time and money.
