Without any promotion or even without any songs ( which are classics but wont click with the audience ) the movie releases .. and ...
Plot ( With Spoilers ) Gulal is the story of Rajputanas of Rajasthan, who are gearing up for a revolt, as they feel that the government has betrayed them and have left them in a situation where they can resprt to either suicide or revolt. The Choose the later and this revolt is lead by Banna ( KK Menon ). He has his huge influence in College Politics in the region and here he meets Dilip Singh ( ).
Dilip has come over from Bikaner to study in Rajputana and at the hostel he meets an outlaw Rananjay Singh AKA Ransa( Abhimanyu Singh ). Ransha teaches Dilip to be brave and slowly and steadily Dilip becomes dependant on Ransa. Ransa was contesting in the election for the post of General Sec of the university against another group of Kiran and Karan( Aditya Srivastav, Black friday Fame ).
Ransa gets killed and Banna gets Dilip to contest for the elections. He Wins. Afte that Kiran plays a political love game with him and destroys everything for Dilip. To the worst of his dismay Dilip comes to know that Ransa was killed by Kiran and her brother. When Dilip realises this he goes all out to kill the people who betrayed him, kills Banna as well but then discovers it wasnt Banna who betrayed, Banna only had the agenda of raising funds for the revolt.
The movie revolves around these characters and this movie shows how the feeling of love can be used to attain power. Its all about betrayal in the end. Love makes u lose, Love makes u kill and Betrayal makes you even more ferocious. But then again as Anurag did it .. YEH DUNIYA AGAR MIL BHI JAAYE TO KYA HAI ... handling 2 in 1 .. Sahir Ludhanavi's lyrics from Gurudutt's PYAASA lust lure you. Gulal is not all about the story only .. but the way the technical aspects of the film has been dealt with is a treat to the eyes. Leave No Smokig, Leave Dev D, this is the best movie to come out of Anurag's kitty after Black Friday.
Anurag has handeled his subject pretty well, the movie though takes an OMKARA look and feel with a lot of cusses and disses but they all come out relevant to the plot. Performances is something which one can go on and on about. Let's go through the performances... Kay Kay - One word, EXCELLENT. He actually emerges the winner perofmer of the film. The Body language, Mannerisms, Voice and expression give u the feel of a Rajput Outlaw. One of the best performances given by him till date. Actually this will rake its place into his top 3. - 5/5 Raja Choudhary - This is the best debut one can have. Just awesome. He as dilip is like the role was tailor made for him.
Brilliantly executed. 5/5 Ladies are brilliant too - Jesse randhawa looks cool in a non glam role. I guess its the body. Mahi Gill is better than She was in DEV D. Ayesha Mohan( playing Kiran ) is the department winner with another debutant giving a stellar performance. Piyush Mishra as Prithvi Bana and Omkara fame Raju Dobriyal as Bhaati are top notch in thier roles. Music : Classy music not to be liked by the audience. Overall - Gulaal is a really powerful film. This film is the league of Hard Social Dramas and will join hands with the likes of A Wednesday, Omkara and Black Friday.
Simply Outstanding. Overall rating : 4 out of 5. A Must watch for everyone who loves Classy Cinema ... Particularly loved a few dialouges from the film, will mention one ...
