What do Saurav Ganguly, Anil Kapoor and The Great Indian Laughter Champions have in common? They are all past their best yet they refuse to quit.

Yes, my friend, vegetables are tasty as long as they are fresh. Once they become stale they can be used only as manure.

Er… my Smitaism may not be as brilliant as the original Sidhuism but the point that I am trying to make is that the GILC is now past its prime and should gracefully go off the air.

Shekhar Suman is too occupied with Kolah Kutty to appreciate the participants’ antics. All his efforts are centered on wooing the lady on screen with his charming (???) smile and witty one-liners. The poor contestants can coax just a perfunctory applause or a nod from him. The only bright spot in the show seems to be Siddhu. Paaji is as enthusiastic and sincere as ever. But one wonders why this show needs judges. They do not do any value addition. They are not beautiful either to be used as props in improving the landscape.

Even the participants seem to have gotten bored. Their record pointers have got stuck at the same kind of jokes.

Ahsaan’s poems are always targeted at politicians; Sunil Pal is busy with mimicry, Raju Srivastav to Manohar bhaiyya ko bhool hi nahi pate, Bhagwant Mann is engaged in comparing shehar ki ladkiyan and gaon ki kudiyan, Parag Ansara is taken up with swapping body parts.-“ Sochiye dil ki jagah kaan hote to kya hota.”

Parag bhai, sochiye aapke jagah koi aur hota to kitna achcha hota.

Mir sucking his lolly all the time just sucks. And Guggi is forever threatening to fly away. (Wish he would). Naveen Prabhakar manages to make us laugh with his pehchaan kaun. But it is only a matter of time before he starts getting monotonous too.

The contestants have now resorted to imitating each other. A few weeks back, Sunil Pal had said in Ehsaan Kureshi style, “Kavita ke maamle mein main Ashish Nehra hoooon…

Mera dost bola chup kar main dono kaan se behra hooooon.”

Ehsaan has paid him back through one of his gags.

“Ek din maine chidiyaghar ki sair ki. Bandar ke pinjre ke saamne gaya. Main pinjre ke bahar tha aur Sunil Pal pinjre ke andar.”

The 4/11/05 episode seems to be the nail in the coffin. Not one gag managed to curve my mouth into a smile, leave alone lol. All the jokes had a sense of déjà vu about it.

The channel had a novel idea when it started the show and the magnificent response they got proved it. The ratings skyrocketed like the BSE index. But overdoing it has killed the humour. The ratings have started plummeting, again like the BSE index. The organisers must sit together and analyse what to do next. Perhaps, bringing in a fresh set of comedians may improve things. And replacing the thunda Kolah with the garma garam Mandira Bedi may help too.

But whatever the plan of action, Star One had better move fast. Kahin laughter champions ex champions na ban jaye.
