I am from Mumbai, Maharashtra. I was the ex-student of Government Polytechnic Mumbai(GP Mumbai). This is well known autonomous polytechnic institute of Government of Maharashtra. This polytechnic college is located at Kherwadi, Bandra East, Mumbai.
The college campus is pretty much big. If you want to take admission there then you have to pass SSC or HSC with very good percentage. Competition is very high for getting admissions there . Generally SSC/HSC toppers from all over Maharashtra who want to make his/her career only in engineering field can be seen in this college. Most of the polytechnic toppers from Maharashtra state who wants to take admission in engineering degree college after 3 years of diploma are from this college. I have spent my 3 years of college life there. I have completed my 3 years of post SSC diploma(Polytechnic) in Computer Engineering from GP Mumbai. Now let me talk about particular aspect of this college.
1. Infrastructure: One of the very big campus in Mumbai for polytechnic college. Even it is way bigger than the engineering college where I am studying currently. There is one main building of four floors. One big sports ground. One hostel for the students came from outside of Mumbai. There is another building of three floors for departments such as(Computer and Instrumentation).
2. Admission: Anyone who want to make his career only in Mumbai can take admission here. Getting admission in this college is one of the tough job. You should be above 85% in SSC for Open category. As there is caste based reservation for seats hence you can see healthy amount of OBC/SC/ST category students.
3. Courses: This polytechnic college offers lot of 3 years of full time engineering diploma courses such as Computer Engg, Civil engg, IT, Mechanical engg, Electronics engg, Electrical engg, Instrumentation engg, Rubber technology, Leather technology.
4. Faculty: I don't know about other branches apart from my. Computer engg department is just an average. You have to do self study if you want to score.
5. Fees: As this is government owned college the fees for open category is around Rs 8, 000 to 9, 000. For other category it is even less than Rs 3, 000.
6. Attendance: Not very strict for computer department at least. They will warn you for maintaining 75% attendance.
7. Canteen: Very very pathetic. Nothing but garbage. Don't even think to order any kind of food from there. It is better to bring your own lunch box with you.
8. Crowd: Mostly Maharashtrians. You can see students from all over Maharashtra. So somewhat gavthi tone people you can find there. That was not true for my case as 95% of my classmates was from Mumbai and its surrounding towns.
9. Extra-curricular and sports activities: There is one cultural fest going on there named as "Kalpak". I don't care about things like extra-curricular activities. Some sports events are also going on there.
10. Hangout: Very few in fact there are none. Nearest hang-out place is Band-stand.
11. Placements: Who wants to place on diploma basis? I am sure 95% percent student don't even think about it. Anyways some companies like Wipro, HCL, L&T, etc do visit there. You are not going get good package on diploma basis. It is better to go for B.E. or B.Tech degree.
Final verdicts: If you are serious about engineering and don't want to do HSC in Science then you should think about this college. As this is autonomous college scoring is very easy there. At the end you are definitely gonna get admission in well known engineering degree colleges from all over Maharashtra.
