I have seen very few movies after leaving Valsad in 1992. The reason is I cannot seat in front of a TV for three (with advertisements it is more than that) long hours and unfortunately there are no cinema hall in towns where I lived after 1992. However, fond memories of some great movies are still in the back of the mind. Golmaal is one of these movies.

None other than the great Bollywood director Hrishikesh Mukharjee created this great Golmaal, an utter Confusion, with his assistant Bharat Rungacharay. To an Indian movie lover Hrishkeshda does not require any introduction. He is a person who can make you laugh or cry by his directions. Golmaal crafted to make you laugh. This is one of the most decent comedies in Indian cinema.

Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Rekha are Hrishikesh’s chosen one. However, in this movie Hrishkesh chosen few very versatile actors like Amol Paleker, Utpal Dutta. Female lead role characterised by mediocre Bindya Goswami. I do not know why she was chosen but Hrishikesh could extract some acting out of her.

Unique combination of timid Amol and his aggressive single-minded boss Utpal played the lead roles. Amol played the duel role to create all confusion. Confusion is at its peak when there are characters like Deven Verma, Om Prakash, Dina Pathak, Shova khote. In this movie Amol tried his best but you know you cannot beat that great character Utpal Dutta when he delivers his best performance that too under the direction of Hrishikesh.

Should I write the story? I think I should skip because most of you have seen the movie. Those who have not seen the movie should not know the story otherwise you will not get confused when you watch it. You will love to get confused in this case. One should watch this movie in a cinema hall. And trust me, theatre look like a venue for an event of some Laughter Club.

I do not remember the names of the storywriter / scriptwriter but they have done their job very meticulously. Hats off to this guys for creating such a huge confusion. They created three great characters – Amol as Ram Prasad, Utpal as Bhavani Shankar and Laxman Prasad as Amol (duel role).

What is there in the name? – Most of us will not hesitate to quote Shakespeare. But it makes lot of difference when a character like Bhavani Shankar addresses Amol as Rramm.. Pprasad… Guys, you cannot hide your smile.

Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza penned dialogues for Golmaal. Writing decent dialogue for a comedy movie is not that easy. Kader Khan, Johnny Lever may be doing it quite frequently for people like Shakti Kapoor or for themselves but writing for films of Hrishikesh requires different test and calibre. Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza has done his job to get all appreciation. ''Main tujhe maaf nahin, saaf kar doonga” (I will not forgive you but I will eliminate you). Guys, you will laugh a lot when someone like Utpal delivers it.

Now the Music – integral part of any Indian movie from any region of this great country. Success of any Indian movie much depends on the music. This country has produced many great music directors. One of them is Rahul Dev Burman. RD gave his best. Some very memorable tunes, a typical Burman style, I still prefer to listen.

RD sang the title song “Golmaal Hai Bhai Sab Golmaal Hai” with his assistant Sapan Chakroborty. A very typical RD style.

The best of the lot is Aanewala pal jaanewala hain, sang by non other than late Kishore Kumar. What a theme – only Gulzar (I believe) can pen such classics and it becomes a Hum-Along song when music is by someone like RD.

A duet of Kishor and his son Amit is “Ek Din Sapne Mein Dekha Sapna”.

Friends, there is a number from Lata. You cannot miss Lata’s number in a movie like this. Lata’s contribution is “Ek Baat Kahoon Agar Maano Tum” – great voice, great music.

So, guys this Sunday drop the idea of going to your laughter club and see the movie. You will be smiling lifelong.
