Sab golmaal hai. Review on Golmaal (1979)

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's movie Golmaal (1979) is one of the

best comedies of all time in Hindi cinema and it keep audiences laughing till

the very last minute.  Golmaal is one of

my favorite comedies of all times which is clean and doesn’t use any loud

expressions or stupid facial gestures to make people laugh. Superb acting by

the entire cast particularly Uttpal Dutt and Amol Palekar makes this movie

worth watching again & again.

Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt) is Ram Prasad’s (Amol Palekar) boss who firmly

believes in the motto “A moustache is the mirror of the human soul and mind”. Amol Palekar’s

dual personality role is worth applauding. At office he is Ram Prasad who wears

short kurtas & oiled hair whereas Laxman Prasad, Urmila’s music teacher is

a flamboyant guy with passion for singing.

One can relate

the story to any middle class society common man who bends himself to get a

job. The characters seem more real and dialogues are very much enjoyable. The

scene where a bulky Dina Pathak, non-existent mother of Amol Palekar, squeezes

herself through a narrow kitchen window and almost lands in the sink is a

visual delight. Cameo role by Om Prakash supports the movie well but one could

have done without the special appearance by Amitabh Bachchan. Amazing

screenplay by Sachin Bhowmick and the witty and the "shudh" Hindi

dialogues by Rahi Masoom Reza make this simple story into a great movie. The

interaction between various characters is given a different colour, be it the

one between Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt or Utpal Dutt and Dina Pathak. Almost

every sequence in the movie stands out. Hrishikesh Mukherjee has used

“moustache” as a sign to show the difference between an individual with old

traditional values and an individual affected with the new "waves" of

change.

The credit for beautiful songs in this movie goes to R.D Burman (music)

& Gulzar (lyrics) with Kishore Kumar’s “aane wala pal” as one of my

favourites. The title song of this movie “Golmaal Hai Bhai Sab Golmaal Hai” is

a nice song & goes well with the movie as everything in the movie is

golmaal.

The movie with rib-ticking dialogues with genuinely hilarious moment’s

serves the very purpose of watching this movie but today’s cinema still lacks

such kind of movies & director of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s caliber. Golmaal

is a complete family movie. Though I have watched this movie many times but I

have always enjoyed it completely.
