The idea of converting a bestseller novel into a Hollywood film probably began only after this blockbuster which probably still retains the top spot in the hearts of many people.Yes, the review is on the movie 'The Godfather'. An excellent depiction of the novel.
For those of you who read the novel, the movie might have been thrilling. But for those who did not read it, it will be even more thrilling. The movie has been made the way, exactly as shown in the book. The story, about the Corleones has been enacted by some of the finest actors in Hollywood. Special mention to Marlon Brando. The best performance, I have seen till date.
The Story...
Well, If you haven't read the novel, here's the story. The story deals with the 1940's era.
In Sicily, there are 5 Don families and 3 of the most respectable are the Barzinis( the most powerful), The Tattaglias and the Corleones. Don Vito Carleone (Marlon Brando), is the head of the Corleones and has an olive oil business. He is kindly called as 'Godfather' by his loyal friends and relatives. He also keeps up to his title by helping them generously. The story begins when Victor Solozzo, a drug dealer, seeks the help of Don Corleone. Solozzo requires the political and legal support. He approaches Don Corleone as he has a lot of powerful friends who are in politics and law. Well, Vito Corleone refuses the offer as he feels that drugs are a crime rather than business. However, his son, Sonny Corleone is interested, but his view is supressed by the Don.
Solozzo kills Luca Brasi ( A loyal friend of the Corleones) to avoid problems. He also sends his men to shoot Don Corleone. Don Corleone survives the bullet shots, but before he is back to normal,things go out of control. Michael Corleone shoots Solozzo and McCluskey( a cop indulged in illegal activities supporting Solozzo) and flees for his life. When Michael is away, his brother Sonny gets killed by the Barzinis. After this action, Don Corleone leaves his position as the Don of the family to his son Michael. From here, the story gets even tougher.
The music and cinematography are one of the best. All the artistes have done a great performance.No doubt, it has been rated the all-time best film by the critics. So, if you missed 'The Godfather', please catch it on DVD. It is a worthy watch.
