I just read a master piece novel The Godfather by Mario Puzo. It is a real classic novel, which is about the Italian mafia. As I said that the novel is a masterpiece one, it is actually full of suspense and thrill and it is beautifully sculpted story of vengeance and power, said on the canvass of Italian mafia of USA.
The main character of story is Don Vito Corleone ? The Godfather, he is the head of Corleone family which is the most powerful family in underworld mafia in New York. There are a total of five families in New York, The Tattaglias and The Barzinis being the other two powerful families but in front of the might of The Godfather they stand nowhere.
Don Corleone has three sons ? Santino or Sonny, Michael or Mickey and Freddie. He has one daughter Constinza or Connie.
The story begins with the marriage ceremony of Connie where the whole of family is celebrating. The might of Don Corleone and his way of working is explained in this part. Don is not like other typical mafia people. He not actually works for money. He indebts people with the services he does in their favour and in turn gains their friendship and when he needs them in his time, he calls them and says them to return his service, which people do very proudly. He has indebted many a people with his services and now he has a lot of friends everywhere, which is what makes his most powerful and most influential in all Dons.
Now a person named The Turk, who is another Sicilian comes to the Godfather for help because he wants to start a drug trafficking business and wants the influence of Don Corleone to start it because he knows that there are too many obstacles in this so he has to do to Don to ask for his protection and to use his contacts in police and with judges. But Don refuses to help The Turk and sends him back.
Now this Turk does is very courageous. He teams up with Tattaglias and shots Don Corleone, but fortunately the Don does not dies but escapes death very closely. The eldest son of Don ? Sonny, takes over the place of his father when Don in on his sick bed. Sonny is a man to be feared and he starts off a war with other families. He kills one son of Tattaglias to revenge the attack on his father.
Later, he plans to kill The Turk and a NYPD captain who is assisting The Turk. This plan is executed by the help of Mickey the middle son of Don. Later it proves to be too much for Tattaglias, and they kill Sonny. This was a shock to Corleone family and thus the Don has to rise from his sick bed, but instead of avenging his son?s murder he calls all families for peace. This seriously deteriorates the position of Don Corleone because he has not avenged the death of his son.
The Godfather retires from his place and Michael takes over his place now. He stays is this position for two-three years. Other families think that Corleone family is breaking because Don had retired and Michael is not ?that good? like his father. In reality they don?t even call Michael ?Don? because they think that he not earns it! But Michael and Don Corleone are planning something really dangerous, because a Sicilian never forgets his vendetta. But Don Corleone suffers a heart attack and dies and that was the time Michael struck with his plan.
This was that plan that earns Michael a new name and new respect ? Don Michael as he was called after the plan was executed, he made the Corleone family again the most powerful in New York and he also took his revenge for his brother.
Now what was this great plan, what was this single thing ? a great conspiracy by Don Corleone under the cover of piece that he called ? plan quietly made by Don and his son, which when executed made them again the most powerful family in underworld Italian mafia!!!
Just for the sake of interest I am not mentioning what all these things were and what made the Corleones again the most powerful in the underworld mafia. Read it out yourself and I have also skipped a lot of portion of the story, this is just an overview of the story, don?t feel that if u have read the above things there will be nothing new the story.
Do read this novel because this is a masterpiece novel. A really great piece of fiction, a real classic.
The story is fast paced but not something Sidney Sheldon, this one is more classical that Sidney Sheldon ? u see he is much of a modern commercial writer but Mario Puzo is more literary in his writing style. Mario makes this story a very compelling one to read with something unexpected happening and making the fate of characters change completely. This is tale of vendetta and power, the struggle between families of New York to be the most powerful, to take of over the mafia business but u see while people without power want to become more powerful the people with power just don?t want to let it go.
A really refreshing read, a great piece of fiction ? a classical masterpiece.
