Bollywood`s take on lesbianism!!!. Review on Girlfriend

The current HOT topic in Bollywoood is sex. Just put some steamy scenes,some bold acts and a film will be successful.This is a formula to make their films successful,in Bollywood,these days. Bold films such as ?Jism?, ?Khwahish?, ?Tum?, ?Oops?, ?Murder? or ?Hawas?, were all accepted by the audiences.

This shows that this controversial topic is now being accepted by the Hindi cinema viewers. Another hot topic,nowadays is homosexuality. There were some gay jokes in ?Rules-Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula?,?Kal Ho Naa Ho?,?Out Of Control?(the character Flower) and ?Masti?. Now, there is the something really SHOCKING. This time Bollywood takes a step further, making a film like ?Girlfriend?, which is about lesbianism. How much will this attract the viewers?

THE FIILM:

S.P. Creations ?Girlfriend?,produced by Harry Baweja and directed by Karan Razdan stars Aashish Chowdhry,Amrita Arora and Isha Koppikar.This is one of the most crazy and bizarre topic discussed in Bollywood.There was earlier a Hindi film made on lesbianism and that was ?Fire?,but it was an art movie.?Girlfriend? is commercial cinema.Now the question is that how good is a Bollywood film on such a topic?

THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:

1.Tanya(Isha Koppikar):Tanya is a strong-headed girl,who is very good at fighting.She is different from other girls.She loves her (female) friend and hates men.Isha Koppikar gets the meatiest role,in this film and after watching this film,you feel as if she deserved this role.She has done an excellent job,as an over-possessive lesbian.The way she walks like a man,is worth noticing.One can feel that she has worked very hard on this role.Her confrontation scenes with Aashish Chowdhry are fun to watch.Also,she is fantastic in the climax.Her face expressions are wonderful.She expresses the anger of Tanya,very well,making you feel for the character,though it is a negative one.I wonder why she was wasted,so terribly in item numbers and special appearances in films like ?Dil Ka Rishta? or the recently released ?Hum Tum?.This film will definitely help her to make her career bright.

2.Rahul Chaudhary(Aashish Chowdhry):Rahul is a very simple guy who is romancing a young girl but problems arise when he finds out that his girlfriend`s best (female) friend is in love with her.Aashish Chowdhry is also competent.Though,this is a film about lesbianism but he makes his presence felt and he has also been given a meaty role.It`s not that he has just romantic scenes.He has many dramatic scenes,as well and he does his job with sincerity.The way he shows his annoyance and frustration,is brilliant.He is a good actor,but he just need a solo hit.

3.Sapna(Amrita Arora):Sapna is a very innocent girl-next-door kind of a character.She has a boyfriend but little does she know that she also has a girlfriend.Amrita Arora is surprisingly good,this time and not irritating,at all.This is the best performance of her life.She has tried her best to give a good performance and she succeeds in delivering it.She looks what she is playing and that is why the character fits her to the T.

THE STORY:

Tanya and Sapna are best friends.Both of them are really close to each other.When Tanya is not with Sapna,Sapna feels very lonely.They live together and they sleep together.They sleep TOGETHER.Sapna thinks that Tanya is just her good friend and there is nothing weird about sleeping with a (female) friend of yours,but Tanya doesn`t feel the same way.She loves Sapna.Whenever,Sapna is sleeping Tanya touches her,whenever Sapna is bathing,she is watching her secretly and when Sapna falls in love,she feels jealous.This is the most strange triangular love story ever.Sapna meets Rahul in a party and after some days she falls in love with him.When Tanya meets Rahul,she feels very bad,especially when he is touching and loving Sapna.Tanya gets over-possessive about Sapna.She tries her best to break the relationship between Rahul and Sapna.When the both of them-Rahul and Sapna are going to Mauritius during a long weekend,Tanya joins both of them and acts as an interferer between them.There,Rahul starts observing that there is something wrong with Tanya.He finds out that Tanya is a lesbian.Will Tanya be able to break the relationship between Rahul and Sapna?Will Rahul be able to prove that Tanya is a lesbian?

THE WORK OF THE CREW:

Karan Razdan`s direction is very good.He has handled each and every scene very well.The scenes which leave an impression on you are,first of all the one where Tanya meets Rahul for the first time and has a bet with Sapna that she will prove that he is like any other boy who can`t love but just enjoy with girls.The scene where the three of them reac Mauritus and Tanya says that she doesn`t think Rahul is comfortable with her presence,is also interesting.The scene where Rahul watches Tanya touching Sapna,while she is sleeping will get you hooked up to the screen.Another scene which leaves an impact is the one where Tanya tells Sapna that she was raped,in her childhood.The climax is also well shot,but it will remind you of the climax of ?Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya?.Screenplay is gripping.Every single scene of the film is very interesting.

Script is well-written.The film has a different story and a controversial topic,which is mainly the plus point of this film.The only problem with this film is that it is too unrealistic,at times.Tanya is so strong that she can kill anyone.Agreed,that she practiced fighting but she doesn`t seem to be that strong that she can beat up a muscular man,so severely.Sapna has been sleeping with Tanya since 5 years.How come she never saw Tanya what was she doing?However,these facts can be avoided.

Dialogues are good.They are witty at times.

Editing is crisp and the film is not so long in duration.The steamy lesbian scenes are well shot between Amrita Arora and Isha Koppikar.They will not disappoint the viewers who will expect to see something hot.

Cinematography is superb.Mauritius has been shot beautifully and the action scenes are also shot well.Daboo Malik`s music is quite forgettable,nevertheless,the music is fine.?Suno To Jaana Jaana?,picturised on Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora is entertaining.?Bheegi Bheegi Hain Yeh Hawaayein? is the only song which you will remember when you will come out of the theatre.It is a good song,picturised in the rain.
