Gir provides an excellent opportunity for nature and wild life lovers to satiate their thirst. I went there in dec 08 with my family and had a wonderful time. Things to remember for friends visiting Gir are -The entry to the sanctuary is only in the morning (0630 to 0800) and in the evening (1500 to 1630).
This is because it takes 2-3 hrs to finish the circuit. Route no 2 and 6 are most probable to see a lion . We were on Route No 2 and manged to see two brother lions basking in the son. Our guide (vijay)was very courtious and knowledgable fellow.
It is prudent to hire a Gypsy for the safari, however your own car is also permitted (with a guide, offcourse) if it meets Euro-II standards. The accomodation provided by the govt is OK. but is in short supply. you need to book in advance.
If you are lucky like we were, you will be able to see leopards as well. We saw a mother and her cub. Staying at junagarh, if you don't get accommodation at Gir is also a possibility. But again, its best if you are reserved. The Gir tarrifs are one and a half times higher during summer vacations, Christmas vacations and Navaratri times so , if you can plan it out of these slots , you will have to pay lesser for the safari.
