Kollywood (Tamil) and Tollywood (Telugu) are almost similar and the audience of both the film industries has similar taste. A movie if hits in Tamil will definitely make it in Telugu and vice versa. Even if a movie doesn?t go well in one language it may click in other. Remaking hit movies is a more secure business down south. Hence most of the heroes here play safely by acting in remakes of already hit movies and proves their stardom. One such hero in Tamil is Vijay whose half of the films in his career are remake films and hits too. The pressure on the movie ?Gilli? was so high because of huge expectation raised due to following reasons

-- Dharani is on a Hatrick after his two consecutive hits ?Dil? and ?Dhool?

-- Vijay has to do something to make his stay permanent here as he gave 8 flops at a strecth inspite of the success of his last film ?Thirumalai?.

-- A.M.Ratnam whose big budget films ?Boys?, ?Kovil?, ?Enakku 20 Unakku 18? were

flopped and again he has invested a lot of money for this flick. If this also flops he will have to face serious financial crisis.

-- Remake of a hit telugu movie ?Okkadu?. Will the Telugu masala click here again as recently there is a drastic change in the taste of viewers.

-- No Comedian, being a commercial film it has no big comedians in the lead and will a commercial movie can make it without a comedy track.

-- Songs are hit even before the movie released.

The movie is titled as ?Gilli? and the nickname of the hero in the movie is ?Gilli? and the movie has nothing to do with the game ?Gilli?. But the movie is a multiple game show. The screenplay has many other games like Cricket, Against the gravity Athletics (running, high jump, long jump, triathlon), Chess, F1 racing, Kabbadi, Wrestling woven together interestingly.

Plot

Vijay is a Kabbadi player who goes to Madurai from Madras to participate in the national level Kabbadi tournament. But accidentally in the journey he saves Trisha from his uncle Prakash raj who has got powers and influence in Madurai city and he loves Trisha to an extent that he killed two of her brothers for making arrangements of Trisha?s marriage with someone else. After that the movie is all about the adventures that Vijay does to save Trisha and send her to USA. Meanwhile Trisha falls in love with Vijay and finally y Vijay wins both Trisha and Kabbadi tournament and defeats Prakash raj.

First of all it is a Chess game between Vijay and Prakash Raj but it is not a usual one to save King but to win a white queen. Vijay fights with all his powers and for each and every violent move of Prakash Raj Vijay tactfully moves his coin and plays safely and finally defeats the King.

Some instances are like a Cricket game between Vijay and Prakash raj. Vijay is only player in his team and Prakash Raj has a team of 20 players. Vijay is batting and Prakash Raj is bowling. When each ball is bowled we feel that Vijay will be stumped in this ball but Vijay plays brilliantly and tackles his balls and sometimes it becomes a sure shot sixer and sometimes a disappointing Dravid stroke but somehow Vijay wins the Trisha Trophy finally.

The chasing scenes and fight sequences features F1 racing and Against the Gravity Athletics. The car chasing scenes are shot at high speeds like F1 racing and Vijay does long jumping between two opposite houses like a spider man and against gravity martial arts as in Crouching tiger and Hidden dragon, high jumping from Light house but gets up and runs safely. Running race occupies most part of the chasing scene.

Kabbadi is featured twice in this film, both are unrealistic, at least the first one is okay but the final one is unbearably long. As I don?t understand the game it was boring for me.

Then finally the movie ends with a Wrestling game in Kabbadi play ground between Vijay and Prakash Raj. Vijay wins both the tournaments in the same ground and the movie ends happily.

Dharani?s has well blended all these games in his screenplay and has delivered a sure shot winner. I don?t how far the screenplay is original, as it is a remake. I heard that he made some changes in the climax. Anyway the screenplay is of jet speed it never gives you time to think about logic. He knows well if the audience gets time to think about the logic, then the fate of the movie will be tragic. He has hit a hatrick on the success of this movie.

Vijay has to improve a lot to become a fine actor but a he has done all necessary to be praised as a great hero. Some of the scenes with his family members are nice and evoke laughter and a okie dokie performance in those scenes. There is no tough expressions are required, he keeps on fighting, chasing, dancing and hardly acts. I like his face expressions while dancing than that in the scenes.

If Vijay scores century as a Hero, Prakash raj scores double century as a fine actor, his dialogue delivery, his body language, his expressive eyes and his unique way of telling ?Chellamae, I Love you? makes him the sure ?Man of the Match? of this tournament.

Trisha is okay and nothing worth mentioning about her except her dancing skills has improved. Jennifer is the second best in the movie after Prakash Raj for her fine acting. She has done a commendable job as Vijay?s sister and her performance evokes laughter quite often. She has a bright future. Dhammu?s comdey scenes are torturing. Ashish vidyarthi does his job well.

Behind the scenes

Cinematography by Gopinath is nor bad but nothing worth mentioning about his work. Art Direction by Maniraj is neither artistic nor realistic. The sets of Vijay?s house and the sorroundings are too far from reality. He has wasted a money of 1 crore. But it satisfies the necessities of an unrealistic screenplay. Can you see such a large terrace anywhere. But the lighthouse set is worth mentioning. Editing by V.T.Vijayan makes the screenplay more tight.

Stunt sequences by Rocky Rajesh are against gravity and too artificial but will satisfy the front benchers. The graphics in stunt sequences are worst at its best. But some fights here and there in between chasing are good. Music by Vidhyasagar is sequels of ?Dhool? songs, all are fast peppy numbers. My favourites are ?Kokkara? and ?Appadi podu? both visually and musically.

These two songs have something fresh to deliver. But the quality of the songs are very less compared to the songs of original version ?Okkadu? which I prefer more. BG score is also not that great and noisy sometimes. Choregraphy by Dinesh and Raju Sundaram deserves a loud applause for their excellent work, their dance steps increase the tempo of the song. As usual Vijay dance is graceful especially in the ''appadi podu'' song.

My thought about the movie is it is a perfect entertainer and has all elements in it to satisfy all kinds of people. But it could have been a classic commercial flick when some care is taken on technical side and also a logical screenplay. Go for it and have a relaxed time. I think Dharani has lot of potential in him and I expect a completely different masala entertainer next time. Could have been better but Good nonetheless.
