Under great expectations 'Ghajini’got released this week. With already two big budget movies ‘Chandramukhi’ and ‘Anniyan’proving to be great money spinners, people were expecting this movie to follow the same route. The combination of Surya and Murugadoss also created much of an anxiety. This is Murugadoss’s venture after ‘Ramana’ which was a landmark in Vijayakanth’s career. Surya has always promised something special for his movies. As the delay for the release doing no good, the expectations kept rising higher.

As with most of the movies with big expectations and anxiety, it doesn’t seem to fulfill it. The movie is just a normal love-action-revenge entertainer. The movie was said to be a copy of the English flick ‘Memento’, but the truth is far from what memento was. They have just taken a very small concept of that movie, that being the hero suffering from a short term memory loss, except that its all original. Let me not give away the entire plot of the movie, will just give you an outline. The movie starts with the hero being portrayed to have a short term memory loss patient, who can just remember everything for just 15 minutes, i.e. the sixteenth minute he will forget what had happened during the first minute. He suffers with this problem in a gruesome attack where he has lost his lover. He just remembers the incidents and faces of people at the time of this incident. The romance and these incidents been told in flashback So he takes revenge and sets out to kill the person who was the cause for his lady loves death. How he goes about it is the story. Let me not say anything more. Do watch it yourself on the silver screen.

Surya has worked really hard for the character. He has developed a great physique. He seems to be getting better as each movie goes by. He looks great in the flashback scenes. His on screen chemistry with Asin is just awesome. He has taken special care of his body language to portray the characterization of a short term memory loss patient. But the one to watch out in the movie is none other than Asin. She steals the show and overshadows Surya in each frame they share. She looks gorgeous and ravishing throughout the movie (except for the intro song, done with some bad makeup). She brings in loads of energy to the movie and her fluency and spontaneity in comical scenes are noteworthy. Special appreciation has to be given to the director for her characterization. This glossy dolly actress does prove that she acts naturally. Then there is Nayanthara as a medical student who helps out Surya. She does her job neatly. She tries to be sexy and glamorous, but frankly she looks too fat and out of sorts in these western wears and skinny clothes. She will be much better of in saree.

Though Murugadoss disappoints us after is hugely success ‘Ramana’, he has put in a decent effort. The chemistry he creates between the lead pair has to be appreciated. With a very interesting knot of having the hero to suffering from a 15 minutes short term memory loss, he could have made the script and screenplay more intriguing. He could have made the latter part of the second half more crisper. Nevertheless a good job done. Harris Jeyraj gives a few foot tapping numbers. As always comes with a peculiar background score and theme. Though it always sounds very similar and resembles some Hollywood movie scores they are indeed catchy. R.D Rajashekar’scinematography is a big plus for the movie especially in the fighting sequences. The locales for a few songs are really good. He does keep up to his reputation. Though graphics seems totally not necessary for the fighting sequences they have been done well.

So, on the whole it’s just a normal masala entertainer. A worthy timepass movie. You won’t feel bored for the three hours you sit. Don’t go with huge expectation you are sure to be disappointed. Don’t expect anything of ‘Memento’ sorts. Go with a mind to just enjoy the movie. Watch it for Suryas efforts and watch it for Asin's performance. You will enjoy the movie.
