The promos looked interesting. The songs were being heard everywhere. And my cubicle mate just recommended the movie. So, I thought I would give it a try.

I never thought that my otherwise bright cubicle mate would have such a bad taste!

I was mostly wondering when the movie would end. I had a tough time watching it. Particularly the fight scenes! They were lengthy and gruesome with fairly unrealistic graphics.

The movie was a mere masala movie. The short term Memory Loss problem was just a psychological babble which was mentioned only in the beginning of the movie. Just to create hype! Here is the rough outline!

The hapless hero remembers very vividly, how and who killed his beloved. He had forgotten everything else. The villain had used a long iron rod to smash her head three times in a row, and then he had used the same rod to hit the hero’s head (as though it were a golf ball) to madness. Due to the major damage thus done to the brain, the hero is diagnosed to be suffering from a disease called short term Memory Loss.

Just put this interesting medical condition in to a masala movie with a typical, ugly looking villain (villains, twin villains), add some gruesome violence, the hero kills one of the sidekicks of the villain by stabbing him with a tap instead of a knife, the tap goes straight on to the guys stomach and blood drips out of it just like water, the villain kicks Nayantara right on to her stomach! then he kills one of the inmates of a ladies hostel and unnecessarily strips her naked! Vulgar to the core!

No prizes to have guessed rightly, the hero kills the twin villains and manages to get away without being jailed. This is the movie which strangely many guys seem to like. It’s unfortunate that Tamil Film industry with all its critically acclaimed directors like Mani Ratnam and Balachandar needs movies like Ghajini to survive.

Yet! It is definitely better than the stuff the other self claimed ‘young super stars’ like Vijay, Simbhu, and Ajit are doing.

Now, the acting department! Surya has acted wonderfully! Has he? I am not sure. I was distinctly reminded either of crow moving its head, or a robot looking here and there whenever the bald headed Surya attempted to act. Well, considering that the fact that he could not have done anything else, it was OK. At least he didn’t speak preachy dialogues like Vijay!

One wonders why Kalpana (Asin) is so bad in general knowledge. Asin as Kalpana had tried her best to look bubbly and funny. Not bad. She did look nice. The worst was Nayantara! I was shocked to find her dressed up just like Mumtaz for a song, trying to bring in unnecessary sleaze. Which MBBS student dresses up like that?

There are several mysteries that remain unsolved! Why Kalpana never read the article in popular magazine that related her with the famous entrepreneur Sanjay Ramswamy? (It had his photo in it, remember?) Why not even a single soul living in the ladies hostel had the brains to call the police, after the twin villains and his sidekicks break in? And most importantly, why this movie is named Ghajini ? And what does it mean?
