Dignity of individuals ridden with skin problems..
Jan 18, 2007 10:03 AM 7863 Views

This is an input for cosmetic companies to help them train their representatives when they market their products to consumers at their counters in any leading outlet - be it Shoppers Stop, Westside or Health Glow.

Those people who are affected by skin problems would be aware of the attention they draw from'wellwishers' in society. Be it family members or colleagues, there is abundant advice comingĀ  their way to help them tackle this issue. As it is with all advice or inputs, those that are laced with sensitive words and do not attack the self respect of the individual, are always welcome.

I am living with mild acne problems for the last 15 years and by now it is a non issue because I believe that my personality cannot be daunted by these aberrations. But I hate it when I am reminded by the cosmetic company representatives at their counters.I am a shopaholic and love to try out new cosmetics which need not always be skin care products. However in their urge to meet sales targets, these folks put on this mask of a well wisher and start off - Well madam I have the right product for your acne problem. OR. The marks on your skin are so bad and my XYZ product will make them go away within 15 days. Phew! Give me a break!

If I have walked upto a counter to buy a product, it would mean that I am aware of my needs. Acne stares at your face everyday, literally and those people who are bothered by it will find out ways and means of treating it. Moreover there are many of us who trust dermatologists than well marketed and glossy beauty products to address this issue. Then why go overboard with recommendations? **I would appreciate inputs from a sales representative who does not punch my dignity when offering their suggestions.

*There could be many users who may not be affected by this behaviour, but I sure get annoyed and hurt. Trust me you too would if every shopping experience is laced with such discussions. Being in the marketing profession, I know there are numerous ways to reach out or suggest new products / services to the consumer. Then why choose the route which hurts the consumers! Not everyone is vocal like me, but I am sure they are hurt.

Every noted cosmetic company has displayed this both to me and my friends in different capacities - L'Oreal, Vichy and recently(evening of January 17, 07 @ Health n Glow in Koramangala, Bangalore) Ponds too! Be it acne, dark skin, dry skin, oily skin, undereye circles! You name it and there are suggestons but I am against those inputs that are demeaning.

Anti - racism movement is gathering momentum and to me this is also a shade of it. I hope I am able to share this with every cosmetic company and make my next shopping trip - pure pleasure!
