http://www.geocities.com is a popular site for hosting personal homepage. It is popular because of the simplicity in making WebPages. One need not have any knowledge of html and it is absolutely free. Anyone can become a member and build a homepage by using easy to use tools. One need not become a member if already have a Yahoo! ID. One has to use the password when asked.
Once signed in, to begin building a web page, select one of the options from the homepage of Geocities. I will suggest to take a tour by clicking ‘take our tour’ on the homepage.
There are two easy options:

1. Yahoo! PageWizards – One can build a webpage very quickly by following step-by-step instructions. This option is suitable for beginners.
If you are building webpage for the first time, it is easier to use PageWizards. Click the PageWizards link from the home page and choose from one of the template designs for your page. There are about 15 templates in three categories; Quick start, Sanrio themes and Popular Themes. One can choose anyone from these 15.
As soon as one selects a template, a new window will open up with your PageWizard. Type your answer of the questions and click the ‘Next’ button. If you want to skip any question then just click ‘Next’ and go to the next question. Skipped question & answer will not appear on final webpage.
At the end it will suggest that you name your page ''index.html.'' One can chose any name. One can view webpage by using the address for the URL: https://geocities.com/yourYahoo!ID/
For any modification one has to follow the same steps.

2. Yahoo! PageBuilder - This tool is little complicated and takes lot of time but one can add graphics, backgrounds, music, attach PowerPoint / Word / Excel sheets, load photographs and even create links all with the click of a mouse. You do not even have to know HTML. One can have several pages.
For the beginner it is better to try PageBuilder Tutorial. It takes about 15 - 20 minutes to go through the 10 steps. This tutorial is an introduction to PageBuilder. In tutorial, one can learn about the basic features of the program such as adding and modifying text, pictures, links, add-ons, uploading files from desktop etc.
To start click ''Launch PageBuilder'' choose a pre-made template below. It takes 3-5 minutes to load PageBuilder depending on the speed of the internet. Follow instruction.
A new window will open with a task bar with icons. These Icon are; New – to add a new page, Open – to open a already created page, Save – to save the page you have created, Preview – to preview the page, Modify- to make changes, Duplicate- for duplication of images, Delete- to remove unwanted part, Order- to change order, Text- to add or edit text, Picture- to add picture or upload from PC, Link – to create links, Add-on – One can add cool stuff to the page like background, Music, Counter, Bullets, Buttons and many more.
All uploaded files will be added in the ‘File Manager’. The File Manager is a web-based tool that displays all the files in GeoCities directory of a member. To make any changes in already created webpage one has to go the file manager and make necessary changes. From the File Manager, you can also create, copy, rename, and delete your pages.
One can also edit the pages by going to ''Launch PageBuilder''. PageBuilder will open the pages and one can make changes by using the icons on the taskbar.
Also in the File Manager, there is ‘Stats Link’ next to every HTML file which links to Site Statistics area. Site Statistics will show you number of visits to that page. For beginners, Easy Upload is the easiest way to upload files to File Manager. Just click the Browse button, select the file you want to upload from the PC, and click the Upload Files button. Speed of Uploading depends on the speed of internet.
One can browse PageBuilder's ‘Help’ section for quick answers for any specific problem.
One must name the first page ''index.html'' in order to see webpage. After naming the first page of website as ''index.html'' and save it and one can view webpage immediately. One can view webpage by using the address for the URL: https://geocities.com/yourYahoo!ID/

Advanced Editor – This is for the Gurus. There are few in MS. One may write or cut and paste the HTML code. Not my cup of tea so leaving this part.

Webpage may be listed in to Member Pages directory. There are many categories to choose from, the list, one can list web page in the right place for visitors to find the webpage. In the GeoCities search engine webpage receive preferred placement.
