Do Not Travel At Night In Mountain Fog

Sometimes we take too much of avoidable risks to avert inconveniences.

On 1st October at around 6 pm we really risked our journey may be our lives. As earlier that day, we faced a landslide on our way, we were behind schedule for 5 hours and it was already dusk when we reached Sela Pass. Our car drove in thick fog for 4 long hours from Sela Pass to Tawang. The visibility of road was near zero. At best we could see 5 ft . After that it was all yellow reflection of our own car's headlight. It was just like a hallow in front of us. The height was 13000 ft with steep gorges.

Moreover at many places the road was narrow and dangerous with sharp curves. You might easily get confused as which one is road and which is the end of it.

Our driver Bijay Bhujel was quite an experienced young man and he kept his speed to bare minimum of 20km per hour whenever needed but several times we just missed the ridge or the rocks by inches and if a thing had gone wrong we would have been in the abyss.

We could have taken shelter in an Indian Army outpost or in a local village. But that would cost us one day less sightseeing and a lot of discomforts and a few more penny. Many a times we refrain ourselves to be out of our seemingly comfort zone and sport a let's see attitude rather than being alive. I still advocated for halt but was outvoted. Moreover we were with a travel agency and our group lead was unable to make up his mind as what to do as he could not coordinate with his manager as the later was in another car.

At the end everything turned out good and we had a great time for the next few days amidst the sunshine in the nature's lap. Now we all are back home safe by the grace of almighty.yes I really mean it.

But that was an extremely risky journey me and my family along with our co-travellers witnessed that night. I would only like to advise fellow travellers as well as myself to keep extra days at hand for roadblocks etc. but not travel at night in mountains especially in fog if you want to live longer. Be strict with your decision. Plan and apprehend these type of situations beforehand and better have a talk with your driver and travel partner during the the onset of the journey.

Happy and safe travelling.
