The 6 yard wonder called SAREE
Sep 18, 2006 03:46 PM 4388 Views

To all the guys out there

This topic may not be of interest to many of you but read on if you want to have a female perspective and a first-hand account from a saree lover ..... Come to think of it, I read somewhere that statistics shows that majority of the Indian men prefer their "spouses" in saree ( I say spouses cos I also heard that when it comes to GF they have a different view altogether--- thats mean if its true).

One of my male colleagues had once commented that "sarees are the most stylish dress you can wear"

Anyway, here I go......

To all the girls out there

I do not know how many of you have actually played as "mummy" or "teacher" in your childhood... I have.... and from what I have seen.... most of the girls have... and one thing that fascinated us all was "SAREE". I still remember vividly, when I, still in my pre-primary school, used to wrap a dupatta around me calling it "saree"... suddenly feeling quite senior to my age :-)) The moment I wore it, I felt so important. Dont know what caused that but I used to feel on cloud nine and then I usually became bossy on my kid brother and other friends :-). Saree, along with some make up, was the best game for me whatever name we would call it....

Then came my teens and education became the highest priority. This did not deter my feelings. I used to love teachers day only to watch my seniors in school wearing "saree". I was waiting for the day to wear it officialy outside the four walls of my house. The D-Day soon came when I reached class XI. A day to rejoice.... The search for a good saree to wear started a month before. I rummaged through my moms wardrobe, my cousins, my aunts but finally chose one belonging to my moms best friend.( you see... grass is always greener on the other side :-) ) Finally got up an hour earlier that day and struggled along with my mother to get it all done neatly. Somehow managed the feat, looked at the mirror a few hundred times.... I started off to school but the moment I stepped out, I - who was supposed to be the bold, the high-tempered, - became docile and shy :-)) VOILA...( or Ayilaaaaa)...the magic of "saree" started working :-)). It was a day worth remembering. That was the day and to this day.... I wear it, love it, cherish it...

Let us get to some details that I can think of.... you can add more information to it.

Physical Properties of Saree

--- Can measure 6 yard or 9 yard... some can be endless like the one belonging to Draupadi ;-)))

--- Width varies as per manufacturers discretion... I have seen some of my tall friends facing problems with some...

--- Thickness also varies.... some are opaque.. so are transparent. Depends on the individual choice:-))

--- Comes in multitude of designs... stripes, polka dots, indian prints. Recently, RMKV (Chennai) has come up with reversible saree.... :-)

--- There can be 1 to 50,000 colour in 1 saree :-) ( have you seen Jyotika in RMKV ad... sorry guys this ones for South Indians watching SUN TV, Jaya etc )

--- Can be worn the simple way (left side pallu), gujju way (right side pallu), 60's way (like Mumtaz and Asha Parekh of thos years ;-)

Chemical Properties

--- Made of Cotton, Silk, mixed cotton, polyester, chiffon, georgette.... havent yet seen it made of paper or plastic or wood.... (what a PJ ;-)))

--- Can be torn with the help of scissor ... villains of Hindi movies can tear it more easily than scissors

--- Can burn easily. (I guess I am getting too influenced by our Indian movies ;-)

--- floats on water ( hence you can use it to save someone from drowing ;-)

USES

1) Is an attire adorning many Indian females.

2) makes excellent gift "for someone you love"

3) Can be used to jump from the balcony just at the time of your marriage :-)) ( like they show in our movies)

4) Can be used as a handy towel in kitchen ;-))

5) Can be torn and used as bandage when your hero saves you ;-))

6) Can be used as a suicidal rope to hang from the fan ;-) incase you dont like my review.... hahahaha

Sorry readers, in my zeal, what started off on a serious note ended up being funny. But I wont re-edit it. Let it be.

The bottomline is that Sarees do increase our feminity. They can add grace to us and make us more respectable. Agreed that it requires practice to be worn but once you perfect it, I think you can be a "show-stealer". I admire Usha Uthup who can sing "pop" songs wearing a saree and a bindi.

So, go ahead girls.... let sarees not become a rarity... unless you are really the skinny sort, you will never repent wearing it........
