Useful Info abt Stroke & Our Personal Experience
Oct 04, 2006 01:35 PM 3846 Views

Its me once again with some more useful information and this time we all learn to identify STROKE...

Read it completely, its a friendly advice...

(Please no offence for choosing the category)

*What is a Stroke?

A stroke or CVA - cerebrovascular accident, is an acute neurologic injury in which the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted due to some problems within the body itself and which involves sudden loss of neuronal function due to disturbance in cerebral perfusion. This disturbance in perfusion is commonly arterial, but can be venous.

The part of the brain with disturbed perfusion no longer receives adequate oxygen. This initates the Ischemic cascade which causes brain cells to die or be seriously damaged, impairing local brain function. Stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurologic damage or even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. It is the third leading cause of death and adult disability in the US and industrialized European nations. On average, a stroke occurs every 45 seconds and someone dies every 3 minutes. Of every 5 deaths from stroke, 2 occur in men and 3 in women.

The main risk factors:

Include advanced age, hypertension or high BP, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking.

Cigarette smoking is the most important modifiable risk factor of a stroke.

Stroke or Brain Attack:

The term 'brain attack' is starting to come into use in US for stroke, just as the term 'heart attack' is used for myocardial infarction, where a cutoff of blood causes necrosis to the tissue of the heart.

Lack of Awareness:

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are much difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Three simple questions:

But after knowing simple facts anybody can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

  1. Ask the individual to smile.

  2. Ask him/her to raise both arms.

  3. Ask the person to try to speak a simple sentence.

Or ask the person to stick out his/her tongue. And if their tongue is not straight but goes off to one side that is    another indication of a stroke.

Immediate Action:

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call hospital immediately and describe the symptoms to the person at the opposite side. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. The widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke which prevent brain damage.

*Our Personal Experience:

We have lost one of our buddy working with us in our office, one day he just got unconscieous in front of us and never wake up from everlasting sleep and we all shocked with this incident and didn't even know the reason for his sad demise. Only after the PM report we came to know that it was a deadly stroke that brings the end of his life, irrespective of his good health and disciplined life he is no more with us...
