I really don't want to generalize here.still going by my own experience, I feel that Toshiba HDDs seem to have higher rate of failure. I have seen many Toshiba OEM HDDs in Sony laptops. My own Sony Vaio laptop(despite due care) experienced HDD failure twice within one year and it had Toshiba.
Earlier laptop being under warranty, the HDD was replaced by Sony and replacement was again Toshiba that gave up within just 6 - 7 months. Later I decided to make my own purchase of Laptop HDD and opted for Hitachi that so far has not given any issues despite it's now in use for over 1.5 years.
It's hard for me to treat 2 Toshiba HDD failures within less than an year as a mere coincidence!
