I have been using a car continuously for the past 11 months. I have traveled 15, 000 km in it.
That amounts to more than 50 thousand Rupees on fuel. If the fuel outlets cheat you of even a few milliliters of fuel each time, the loss can go into thousands of rupees over a period of time.
Here is an incidence I encountered:
I stop the car near the HP pump in Borivali(E), Mumbai. As usual I release the fuel cover and get out of the vehicle to watch the fuel meter and the guy filling the petrol. I ask for 20 litre petrol.
Another guy turns up and asks if I have an ICICI credit card. I say yes, totally forgetting that I have to see the meter at zero. In that fraction of a second the filling has started and the meter is already showing 1.5 liters. Shucks! I am sure that the meter was already on 1 litre after the previous customer with a scooter left. There was no way to check this. I asked the guy if the meter was set to zero. He swore that he had set it to zero. I was planning a long trip and could not waste time arguing about this. My doubt was confirmed only after I finished up that 20 litres of petrol and my average per litre turned out to be less. I keep a correct record of the average my car gives me on each filling depending on the type of driving - intra city or highway.
Lesson: Do not be distracted in any way when you are filling up fuel in your vehicle.
Also, I am fully responsible for my carelessness.
I sent a email to HP as advised on their web site. They must have simply deleted that mail.
Someone in Pune had tried to repeat this on me. But I had already learnt that lesson and I simply ignored the "Do you have an XXXX credit card" question.
