Hi Friends,

I am back. But this time the I wont say anything about the Pathetic Computer Institutes out there.

Being a software professional, I am often asked abt the latest technologies, the sustaining ones, the obsolete ones, the emerging ones and wht not.

So I thought that there mite be a few confused guys(like I was )who are in the process of learning and are new in this field. This mite help.

In this Internet world, technology comes and goes at a warp speed(remember C#, VJ++ etc??) The industry is transforming from the eras dotcoms, telecoms etc. to healthcare, education, consulting etc. There seems to be a war going on and there are tow major players out there(no points in guesing them) Microsoft and friends and Oracle and friends. There mite be some exclusions...but these two are fighting it out. Microsoft uses its windblows(windows)ammo, while Oracle is promoting Linux. MS is supporitng its SQL Server, Oracle has its own Database. MS has ASP ,Oracle is working as cohort with SUN to promote JAVA(JSP).So the question arises...wht shud we do?? Simple.

I have divided this field into the following major divisions:

1.DBAs

2.Networking Professionals

3.System administrators

4.ERP Specialists

5.Programmers

The latter one(programmers) are dime a dozen(sorry no offense meant) but honestly, since the layoff period in US there are a lots of programmers who are still hunting for jobs. I can narrate a lots of stories of my friends. Every one of them is either working on low-paying jobs, or working on contract jobs. Many are out of their old expertise and opting for the least glamorous profiles. And more over the programming languages and scripts are abounding that one cannot afford to burke any of them. This makes a programmer more frustrated and upset. So my advice is that each individual is a gr8 programmer with his own skills and expertise, with some amount of Logic. Those who want to rub shoulders with all the experts out there..GO!!! give it a shot!!!

ERP experts. Ok this is one of the cream jobs in the Industry. Highly expensive training, demanding high-paying jobs. Ppl who opt for this field have to have an open mind coa this is different from our normal programming. A lots of things go into making this ERP software(SAP, BaaN, Oracle, PeopleSoft,Siebel etc) The programming part being one of the modules of this huge software. Training ranges from anything between 40000-2.5 lacs. The sad part being very few training centres promise jobs.Go on search the mesageboards for ERP., u'll know wht I am saying. But the sunny side is if U get into this ....u r in for life..high paid jobs- both Client side and Consulting side. so this who are having a few bucks to spare ..ahem..go for it(i am not betting on it though)

System administrators and Networking Professionals can be clubbed together and are platform dependant. There are Windows NT administrators, Linux(UNIX)sys admins,Novell Netware professionals etc. There are some guys who program (write)some network programs, but these are some hardcore programmers. These System administrators have an indepth knowledge of the OS like Unix,Linux etc. While the NW professionals shud have a thorough knowledge abt Hubs, Routers, VPN, IPLC connectivity etc.Certification of the parent company is the best thing one can get and cud add more importance to your profile.

DBAs are arguably the most safe of the lot.(open for Debate) See, it goes like this, DBA(Database administrators)are reqd by most companies who are using Databases (and there are quite a lot of them)Major players like Oracle, Sybase etc need an expert certified by them who can manage their Huge database with huge amout of data..it really requires expertise. Now if Sybase is slowly phasing out...Oracle is the SOLE leader. And there are a lots of Companies both Govermnent and Private, both in India and Abroad who are using Oracle. So the demand for an DBA does not die...on the contrary in this time-specific, dealine following business world, u require lots of them. Its not easy to find a suitable guy with the suitable qualification. One mite know oracle but he can be a developer, using the tools provided by Oracle to program business Logic. There are a lots of users entering the data in the DB and require constant monitoring and management. DBA has to do that.Granting access to the users, maintaining the ''fluency'' of the database, indexing, etc all has to be done by the DBA. Its one of the Non -movers of the industry. If one wants to go for it and asks me....I wud say ...GO FOR it and the best way is to plan ur basic qualifications and then get an Oracle certification and try hard...real HARD!!!

Few more programming skills are in demand. PHP, ASP, JSP,VC++( this is the Dark Horse) PHP is linux based, ASP can be used for IE and other browsers. JSP can also be used for Internet programming. VC++ (I found this language very hard to master personally) its really a very powerful language(applications ranging from interactive softwares, to ship navigating softwares,to GPRS systems etc)and there are a few programmers out there.Companies are in need of hardcore VC++ programmers. So if u are good in doing OOP and have a high level of patience and a inclination for hard work...this is the language.

I do hope this helps.Hey!!!!No ones contacting me!!...:-( please feel free to contact me so that I may be able to share my knowledge with u all.....Ciao.
