FIAT..BACK with a BANG

Italian auto major, Fiat India plans to have another shot at the Indian market. It is planning to revive its India operations with a range of new models, a fresh infusion of funds and revamping its current dealerships.

With a huge demand for compact and entry-level cars in India, Fiat is currently conducting feasibility studies of two hatch-backs in the country? Panda and Idea.

The face-lifted Palio and Uno, launched already in Italy will also makes their way into the country early next year.

Fiat is hoping that if it localises both the Idea and the Panda, it could price them competitively.

The new Panda(known as the Gingo before launch) is the car which takes Fiat back to its roots. Externally, the styling of roof bars and detailing(mostly the work of Bertone) has been influenced by the SUV culture. Underneath the skin, the Panda gets a 1.3 16v multi-jet diesel engine. Other possible engines include the 1108(54bhp) and the 1242 cc(60bhp) petrol units. The New Panda went on sale in Italy and various markets around Europe from Autumn?03.

The Type 350, or Idea is a new mini MPV, based on a slightly stretched Punto platform. Mechanically conventional, with its small four cylinder petrol(1.2 and 1.4 litres) and diesel(1.3 and 1.9 multi-jet) engines mounted transversely at the front.

The Idea went on sale in various markets around Europe at the beginning of?04.
