I fail to understand this sudden surge in the automobile market, where manufacturers are making a beeline for introducing new products, that too in the higher D segment and above, when there are hardly any roads in India. Most metro's have less roadspace than is stipulated for any city.
The world over most modern cities have around 8-10% city area as tarmac compared to a dismal 2% in India. I'd like to point out that for a person visiting Delhi from any other part of the country the roads might seem roomier, but in reality this is cancelled by the sheer fact that Delhi has more cars than Kolkata, Mumbai & Chennai put together. Anyway so much for the insight into the roads, 2003 has already seen the Pajero, Forester, Vectra & Corolla launch. Another couple of Days will see Maruti's foray into the SUV segment with the Grand Vitara XL-7 at a pricetag of around Rs. 20+Lacs. May should herald the much awaited Opel Corsa hatchback at a neat price of around Rs. 4.25 Lacs. Also slated for this year in the SUV segment Hyundai Terracan (Rs. 16+Lacs) and Honda CRV (Rs. 18+Lacs). The small car segment will probably see the GETZ.
Ford also has plans to fill the gap between their Ikon & Mondeo with the Focus sedan at around Rs. 10 Lacs. The Mitsubishi Lancer will probably get a new 1.8 litre engine by September and the Honda City will get a makeover. Skoda will definitely bring in the Superb. BMW & Volkswagen also have plans for India, though the products are yet to be finanlised. I'd bet on the 3-Series and the Beetle as their forerunners. There are talks of the Matiz and Nubira, both Daewoo products, being badged under the Chevrolet brand for India. How the year actually plays out is anyone's guess though.
