Are you the type that has a little journal under the bed where you record your thoughts and is for your eyes only? Are you one who likes to chronicle all your life's big events as SOON as they happen? Are you the creative writing type? Or are you just so bored that anything could entertain you? Well if you've answered 'yes' to all the above, welcome to the 21st Century where a new breed of ''dear diary'' is quickly gaining popularity among the ones with a penchant for writing. It's the age of the Blog.

Whats an...ummmm... blogger???

Webloggers or simply bloggers (as they are endearingly referred to) are a rapidly growing community of internet users who have embraced the internet into their personal lives. A number of netizens find a variety of uses for this simple web-based text authoring tool.

What does a blog do for me?

Here are just a few potential ways you can use your blog:

  1. Record your innermost thoughts and desires and save it in a place on the internet that's reserved for JUST you.

  2. Record interesting happenings in your life that you can look back to in the future. You can either keep them private or share them among your family and friends.

  3. Creative write your way to glory. If you're the aspiring writer type who likes scratch padding your thoughts on paper, the blog's a nice clean way of doing it.

  4. Make your blog a message board. If you're an internet socialite, get a community going through your blog. If it's a public blog, pretty much anyone can drop a note. You could probably start a fan club for your favorite band or actor, or a discussion board on something you feel strongly about.

  5. Get a date. Needless to say, this is a long shot but if you're too wimpy to pick up chicks/guys at bars and prefer the non face-to-face approach, advertise yourself on this free space that the web provides you. The chances might be slim but who knows, you could end up lucky.

Does anyone actually do this stuff?

Ever heard of the Baghdad Bloggers? These were web users in Iraq who shared their experiences with the rest of the world using the blog as a medium. It gave bloggers in other countries more insight and better perspective on the life of the average Iraqi in war ravaged Iraq.

But I'm not an Iraqi....!

Oh come on! Wise up won't you? Don't you have any experiences you want to write about?

Besides what's really nice about blogs is... they're free space on the web!

Think about it. You've got your own little corner on the web that you have complete control over. You can add links, format the blog website to your liking and upload pictures. And many, many years later when you're graying and rich and have a job where you don't actually work for a living and want to reminisce, you don't have to dust off your attic to find your little journal. It's right there on the web, as good as new.

Ok, ok..I think I'm convinced.. but I don't know how...

I know that - otherwise you wouldnt have gotten this far. There are tons of samples on the web that you can check out before you venture into your own blog world. Here's one I thought was interesting. It's a blog from Dan Kennedy,a senior writer and media critic at the Boston Phoenix.

Enjoy it. Some of his off-the-record takes on world events are hilarious.

Alright I'm sold. Where do I start?
