Why are managers IDIOTS?

  • “Leadership is doing right things; Management is doing things right” – Steven Covey

My note to managers here … I do not mean to hurt any Managers. Before you would decide anything on what is to follow, please do leave all your resistances and prejudices behind and pounce on me when you have read till the last line of what I have written here.

Type ‘define: Boss’ on your Google search box and press enter. You will find a whole lot of new meaning you would have never come across. Before that, the boss you would have known, I am sure cannot be very different from the famous HARI SADU(Of course, leaving out a few exceptions). Why?

Managers forget that they were employees too

I am damn sure it is not because of their PMP or MBA. There is a steep attitude change when a person becomes a manager. It is the attitude that makes people different when they become managers. A Manager when he was an employee would have said, “Hey I am getting bored of this work. I need change. I cannot work here anymore”. The same words when repeated by their employees are misinterpreted by them as ‘Demanding’.

Managers don’t manage

A manager’s role is to make people work and thus increase the revenue to the organization. That was an ideal scenario. But nowadays, managers want to increase revenue to the organization, and thus expect an employee to work. They just want the work to be done, at any cost. They think that giving people lots of money will keep them happy and forget that there are things like motivation, feeling of importance, responsibilities and much more an employee would expect. Also, a person who has grown up to that stage should know to shield the pressure of higher management from the employees. Instead, our managers are very well known for their cascading effects.

Managers don’t understand that the majority are employees

This is what a presentation said, “We have cut down the cost of operations by bringing down the onsite offshore ratio from 1:5 to 1:9, thus increasing the revenue by 5% … blah blah”(clap clap) and this was presented to employees. This will keep the senior management happy, but they do not make an organization. It is the huge flock of employees who form the back bone of an organization.

What did that presentation imply to the employee? No more onsite chances. Instead, it could have been, ““We have cut down the cost of operations by bringing down the onsite offshore ratio from 1:5 to 1:9, thus increasing the revenue by 5%. That means we are moving towards paying you more bonus and only the deserved will get to go onsite. Not anybody out of mere chance”. That will make the employee happier and motivated.

Its high time the managers start thinking from an employee’s perspective.

Managers think managing is just another work …

But it is unfortunately not. They have to understand that they are representatives of a large group and get more responsible. Management is not maths, its art. When 200 employees would be eagerly waiting to know about their appraisal outcome, our Manager will remain unperturbed and do this work for the sake of doing. The results come out at the last moment and there would be no discussions for the employee to know why he has fared so badly.

Managers are stereotypic

Managers do not understand that innovations, changes and improvements are possible even in management. That is why most managers look no different than an Idiot in every employee’s eyes. They think MANAGER is a huge position and trying to live up to that big image they become stubborn and arrogant. They forget that basics like humility and care for subordinates will make them better persons, which eventually will make them better managers.

  • Well, that was just a check list I prepared for myself to remember “don’t’s” when I become a manager myself down the line
