How Important is CSR?

To make it more simpler, let me begin it this way; Recently I came across Reena, a 9 year old girl in her 3rd grade. Her father being a good friend of mine wanted me to take care of Reena for a couple of hours and that is when I realised the Importance of Corporate Social Responsibility towards their employees.

Kiran works in London as a Programmer for an IT firm and is is divorced. His daughter is Reena. Kiran starts his work at 7:30AM and finishes at 5:00PM. Reena goes to school at 8:30AM and finishes at 12:30PM. The school bus picks and drops Reena on time. Kiran being an average earner feels that hiring a maid to take care of Reena is beyond his reach. In his professional life, Kiran is an excellent worker. He outstands his colleagues by intelligence, time management and efforts. Valuing his service to the firm he was proposed incharge for two major projects worth half a million British pounds; due to be delivered at the end of January 2003.

The month of December began and schools closed down for Christmas. Reena was to sit at home and play but Kiran had to work. On the 7th day of December 2002 he was forced by Reena to go to office One and a half hours later than his usual timings as she felt uneasy that morning. He reached office at 9:00 AM [90 minutes late] and requested the management that he would have to leave early for the next 1 week to give his daughter some personal care. However the management asked him to continue the way he would like to.

It was the 27th day of December, the pay day. Kiran noticed in his payslip that an amount of £233.33 was deducted from his salary for being late for a week @ 3 late days deducts 1 day salary. He was distressed, troubled and irritated. He had pre-planned his income/expenditure and the deduction in his pay affected his plans. It was 28th December 2002; 8:00 AM. Awaiting his General Manager, Kiran took a seat in Warren's office. Warren, the General Manager arrived at 8:10AM and immediately questioned his concerns. Kiran was forced to explain his situation awaiting a solution to the problem. Warren promised to speak to the management and get back to Kiran at the earliest.

At 4:30 PM Kiran was summoned by Warren. Warren explained that it was impossible to convince the management. Kiran got tensed and felt his nerves. He quit the firm immediately by giving a two weeks notice. The two major project handled by him was handed over to another Alec.

The calender marked the day as 30th January 2003 and the time 10:30 PM. Alec faced major problems rectifying some codes written by Kiran. He still has to text Project 2. Unable to control his tension, Alec left the job incomplete.

On the 31st January the clients finding that the job not being completed paid for the completed job [that resulted in £350, 000].

Well! The moral of this incident is that this firm is:

PENNY WISE and POUND FOOLISH

If the firm had paid Kiran the £233.33 they could have saved time and money. It would have helped the IT firm to complete the project successfully opening opportunity for such new projects.

From this incident we can understand that a firm who is socially responsible towards its employees will never face such impasse.
