Why being LAZY is good

I'll tell you a joke: ''Technology was made to make life easier for man. No trust me really.''Not very long ago, at the begining of the industrial revolution Benjamin Franklin said : there will be a time when man wont have to work for more than 4 hours . Rooselvelt bet it at 2hrs. by 2000 .

But they'd be for a surprise if they saw today's world, where people are busy 24*7, 365 days a year in this fast globalized world where time is money.

Does man have to be a prisoner of this fast paced world? a slave to running things 'hurry up' everything?

The theory of evolution says''the survival of the fittest not the fastest''. here's why I think being fast is not fit enough , there is a slow way out and how it is going to overtake the fast . lets consider a simple example :

Case study : Bodybuilding . Healthclub's world over now recommend that the most effective and efficient way to build up muscles is to exercise slow a fewer times a week as compared to exercising fast . Exercising SLOW gives you a better physique faster .

Ofcourse, one thinks this is an isolated case the same cant apply to our daily lives where everything has to be fast . How can slow be better than fast in our hectic life? lets analyze how being slow affects our life :

~Slow in business~

isnt this the best way to go bankrupt? in this globalized world where we've come from 'the big eats the small' to 'the fast eats the slow' , doesnt being slow means making a pepperoni salad of yourself ? well, not exactly if you consider this :

  1. What we buy : the market today is all commodities. What value does an object have when you can buy 10 exactly the same from market. The very fact that things are mass produced makes them disposable. There is nothing special about something so readymade. Thats why there are price wars. Why pay more? This obviously suffocates business. Compare that with an old man selling his hand made paintings for crores.

  2. What we sell : every top company today sells service. Where will a patient feel better: with a doctor who disposes off with them in two minutes or with someone who has enough ear to carefully listen to them and care for them. Which one is indispensable?

  3. When we work : today everyone is a slave to work. we run to the office, run for coffee, run back to home, run, run, run. It is now universally accepted that everything from insomnia, anxiety, depression to peptic ulcers, diabeties, heartattacks are caused by stress.where does stress come from ? haste at work. We can argue its our bosses fault but whose health is it? Perhaps we can wait for the promotion or that raise. Its all a rat race isnt it.

Are we rats ?

By going so fast we are our burning ourselves out just like we're burning our mother earth of its resources, faster than it can replenish. The scary question is what happens next?

~Slowness in life~

Now that's what we all desperately need. Isnt it evident by the rise of yoga, meditation, the millions of self help books. But basically, if we look at this way we can revitalize our lives more than we thought :

  1. Food : Fast food is like a Big Mac burger. Dont we love it? Well its yummy no doubt. but is it nutritious? Is the amount of 'oil and fry' healthy? I think we all need to develop a fresh taste for our home food. Our arteries will appreciate that more than the peptic ulcers we give ourselves.

  2. Relationships : The biggest curse of a busy life is that we dont have time, for our friends, family, wife, children, parents, ourselves(?). The biggest problem of not enough attention, the biggest epidemic on earth is not helped by our busy lives, no matter how many self-help books we read.

Having time for people you love matters.

  1. Sex : okay I wont go in much details here, but unlike expected with so much of sex in tv and movies, the 2 minute quicky is still the most practised form of sex worldover. ofcourse we dont fantasy that, but sadly thats what most busy people can afford. dont believe me? watch some of Emraan Hasmi's movies. Thats why he always gets the married girls doesnt he?(okay, take this one lightly)

  2. the biggest enemy :

How TV is killing our free time : Here's the scientific fact. We dont relax while watching TV. watching TV is an activity which also makes us tired. the world's fav. passtime robs us of the little time we have for ourselves and our family.

~The silver lining to the dark clouds ...~

In this age of technology anything that doesnt work at the speed of computers makes us impatient. We want to 'hurry up' everything. And thats where our obsession with saving time leads to: road rage, office rage, relationship rage, vacation rage, shopping rage. no doubt we hardly have time for ourselves. Fast life is the biggest cause of diseases, deaths, depression and unhappiness. The good news is we can press the brakes.

A little slower, it turns out means better, better health, better work, better business, better relationships, better sex, better exercise, better food, better life.

~Understanding the Paradox~

It is impossible to survive if we are not fast enough in todays world. Sometimes you need to be faster and faster. But sometimes you need to be slow. Some things cannot and should not be sped up. At other times when it is not most important to accelerate we can avoid pushing the accelerator and I dont just mean driving. Slow does not always mean slow. Performing a task slowly often yields faster results.

The trick is to know when it is not all that important to speed up. When it is not we can and we must consciously try to slow things down. try not to hurry up on holidays & breaks. not just at work but also at home.not just with employees but also with friends and family. And once you start challenging the hurry up attitude, you will go deeper into things rather than skimming along the surface.

Try to be lazy sometimes. Its okay to be lazy. Trust me, just try it someday and you will feel thankful to time, thankful to live.

And then like everyone else, you ask ''why didnt I do it sooner?''

So was it just a coincidence that the tortoise wins over the hare in the race or does the story have a much deeper and relevant truth in it ?
