Gargi Memorial Institute of Technology(GMIT) is located in southern fringes of Kolkata, in Baruipur. Baruipur is not a well known place and it takes almost one and half hour to reach there from Sealdha station by local train. This place is not actually believed to be in kolkata city. But, GMIT in Baruipur has come up as emerging engineering college under WBUT very recently.
It had been awarded No 8 rank in the category of top emerging private engineering colleges in India by a recent research done by the Times of India.
This college is offering B.TECH courses in 5 streams and they are:
*B.Tech in Civil Engineering
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
B.Tech in Electrical Engineering
B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering
B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering*
This college has said to have a German company tie up and a direct placement to German after successful completion of this course in quite possible!
I recently visited the city office of GMIT, located in Gariahat to get some information for my nephew, just passed class 12 with a decent score 62% and an average joint entrance rank. I talked to the HR people there and liked the way they are teaching the students. Engineering course in India are still based on imparting bookish knowledge, so even a fresher feels like a fish out of water when he gets a new job.
GMIT has taken a very important step introducing employability focus program for the students taking admission here. This program will go parallel with the 4-years B.tech program and help a students to be industry fit along with regular study in conventional style. If this model is properly followed, GMIT will be pioneer in this regard and students will be genuinely benefited!
I visited the college campus too, though it is away from main city and takes ta bit of time to commute, the campus is just awesome covering a large area. Classrooms are spacious, labs therere also seems to be equipped with latest facilities and infrastructure.
They have hired retired faculties from reputed institutions like Jadavpur University, Bengal Engineering College Deemed University( formerly known as Shibpur) etc.So, students are rest assured to get excellent faculties with vast experience.
Now comes the most important aspect of placement assitance. GMIT is trying their best to increase their industry network and some of the final year students already get absorbed by some multi national companies. So, with in next couple of years, they will surely make a 100% placement record.
Distance is a problem. My nepheew has to go to TollyGunj Metro first and then get his college bus, so he needs at least 2 hours time to reach to the college. But, in the long run, things will fall in to place with regular habit. Roads are in well condition and it is pleasant experience to travel through some country side area with out any traffic congestion.
We have decided to take a final call and will get him admitted to GMIT.
If you ward is an average first division student and has not scored good rank in joint entrance, you can consider this college for his admission. The course fees are also affordable comparing to other city engineering colleges.
I am recommending GMIT.
