Masaledaar and Chatpata. Review on Garam Masala

There are films which teach you something and make a lasting impact on your psyche and then there are films which make you laugh and go flying out of your head as soon as you leave the theatre.Garam Masala most definitely belongs to the latter category but do not think less of it for that reason.

It’s a film about Makrand aka ‘Mac’(Akshay Kumar),a photographer and his assistant Shyam aka ‘Sam’(John Abraham).Mac and Shyam are both on the lookout for the girl(or girls!) of their dreams.But Mac is left high and dry when Sam wins a photography competition,becomes his boss and is gifted a month long free trip to the States too!He is inconsolable and fed up with life but a money-minded colleague helps him out by introducing him to three air hostesses.Mac successfully juggles relationships with all three(who are meanwhile blissfully unaware of each other’s existence),with the help of an alcoholic driver(Rajpal Yadav) and an exasperated cook(Paresh Rawal).But an unexpected twist in the tale comes when Sam comes back from his trip and demands to stay with Mac or he will expose him to all three of his girlfriends.Mac reluctantly agrees as he has no other choice.Under the pretext of helping him out,Sam desperately tries to woo all the girls in the hope that he’ll be lucky with atleast one of them.He manages to strike gold with one of them but unfortunately that’s when everything falls apart.The three girls become aware that they have been made fools all along and want nothing to do with both of them;on the contrary they become so angry that Mac and Sam have to run for their lives.Meanwhile Mac’s long ignored and neglected ‘actual’ fiancée(Rimii Sen) decides to leave him but he realizes his folly at the last moment and manages to win her back.

For all of you who are unaware,this movie is a remake of the Malayalam flick ‘Boeing Boeing’ also directed by Priyadarshan.Though this one can’t hold a candle to the original,its quite good in its own right.Priyadarshan as a director once again manages to tickle the audience’s funny bone.He manages to infuse comedy into each and every situation,no matter how mundane.

I don’t think I even need to say that Akshay Kumar is awesome.He has perfected the art of enacting the wily Casanova.As the perpetual flirt in this movie,he just cracks me up totally.His every single expression is guaranteed to make you laugh.

John Abraham tries his best to follow in his senior’s footsteps but he still has a long way to go.But full marks to him for making a sincere effort.In certain scenes his potential clearly shines through.Maybe a few more comic roles and he’ll definitely make it big.But I must mention,he looks amazing in the film and a big thank you to Priyadarshan for all of John’s topless shots!

The chemistry between the two male leads is a treat to behold.They complement each other perfectly.I hope I see this pairing again,very soon.

Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav once again prove their mettle.Whether in their scenes together or separately,they add to the comedy quotient.

The three newcomers are competent though they have a tendency to sound too shrill at times.Neha Dhupia and Rimii Sen are totally wasted as they have absolutely no scope to perform.Rimii’s fate is even worse than Neha’s,at least the latter has a song with the two heroes.

My only crib is the inappropriate timing of the songs in the film.Except Ada and Chori Chori, all the other songs seem to have been shot with the sole purpose of showing as many scantily clad women as possible.What was Priyadarshan thinking?

Anyway watch this movie with a huge gang of friends and you will definitely have loads of fun.
